Game #1:
PENN STATE 27, University of Central Florida 24 Man it felt good to kick off the 2002 Nittany Lions' football season.....nice day for football, the sun was brutal but it could have been worse. PSU looked pretty shitty in the first quarter, allowing UCF to score on the first drive and then looking like crap on offense. But they finally got things going after that, Larry Johnson looked pretty good now that the starting tailback job is all his...I like the use of the option, Zack Mills looked pretty comfortable (even though he got flattened on one touchdown) he racked up 194 yards passing and two TD's. Still, things were a little shaky, when I left with 10 mins left Penn State was up 27-9, by the time I got home I saw that they had allowed two more touchdowns, I don't know whats up with that. I guess it was just some first-game jitters, let's hope so, if they do this in two weeks against Nebraska they're in for some trouble. Friday, August 30, 2002
I'm finally back, did you miss me?
Haven't been online in what feels like forever. I moved into my new apartment last Thursday (Americana House, C4, oh yeah) only to find that my computer is gay and it wouldnt hook up to our internet....that was pretty much the final straw, so Jen found me a new computer online which is 10 times better than my old one, not to mention it only cost me $400....I'm typing on it right now and I have to say I love it. Thanks Jen for all the help. Another reason I haven't been online is because I've spent the last 7 days pretty much at the Collegian. I started my new job, I'm a sports night editor, meaning I read the stories and lay out the pages, write headlines, etc, basically I'm responsible for any mistakes in the paper. I had to take like a 400 hour training session and then I had to work every night this week. But now luckily I'm off for the next few days, and from now on I'll only work 3 nights a week. And by the way, I'm pretty damn good at my job, too. Started classes, they're pretty dumb as usual.. nothing too challenging, except maybe PHILOSOPHY OF THE MIND, if you're into that sort of thing. I'm also taking copy editing (the teacher was an editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer), news ethics (the teacher is a native american) and theater (the teacher likes Spongebob Squarepants....and Jen is in that class, too).......I also have this sociology class which is awesome, there's no book and all the teacher does is tell us stories about his life that are funny as hell, its really entertaining, when he grew up his dad was a professional gambler so he's got some good stuff to talk about. The agenda for this weekend: going bowling tonight with the collegian sports gang, should be interesting........then the big football game tomorrow, Penn State kicks off its 116th season against the University of Central Florida at 12:10 p.m. tomorrow at Beaver Stadium (televised nationally on ESPN...look for me somewhere near the 50-yard line). The Nittany Lions should have little trouble pounding the Golden Knights into submission as they improve to 1-0 and prepare for an electrifying matchup with Nebraska in two weeks. ****THIS JUST IN***** The millionaire crybabies of Major League Baseball have agreed to a new six-year contract, meaning that there will be no strike this season and the games will go on. Congratulations for having just an ounce on intelligence and doing what is right. This clears the way for the New York Yankees' 27th world championship. Wednesday, August 21, 2002
Well the summer officially comes to a close tonight, tomorrow morning at the crack of dawn I'm off to State College to move into my apartment and begin my senior year........it's really been a great summer, plenty of ups and a few downs, but a memorable one nonetheless, I want to thank everybody that made it possible, you know who you are.....
What did I do on my final day of freedom? Went to sunny Belmar, NJ for a nice beach trip with Jen......also got my car worked on (for a whopping $117!) I'm about to eat a homecooked spaghetti dinner, then pack up my stuff. Check out this outrageous piece of news, courtesy of Blabbermouth.net: JUDAS PRIEST have become the latest targets of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), according to EntertainmentIdaho.com. PETA fired off a letter to band members last week, asking that they change their 1978 album Hell Bent for Leather to Hell Bent for Pleather. "Actually, I'm a big JUDAS PRIEST fan," spokeswoman Lisa Franzetta stated. "The idea is not to give them hell, so much, but to encourage them and their fans to make a more compassionate choice." To make her point, Franzetta, 24, enclosed a video of slaughterhouse footage along with a convincing photo of herself in a black pleather dominatrix outfit. Pleeease, give me a break.....you know, there's nothing wrong with wanting to end animal cruelty and all that, I personally think its a good cause, but the way they go about getting publicity for themselves is totally screwed up, I mean this freak really cares about Judas Priest and their fans making a more "compassionate choice," get outta here, she's the one that should be turned into one of Rob Halford's biker outfits. Alright enough of that, I'll leave you with more world-famous song recommendations, check them out.........if you dare. 1. Pantera f. Rob Halford - "Light Comes Out of Dark" 2. Halford - "She" 3. Slayer - "Jesus Saves" 4. Beach Boys - "God Only Knows" 5. In Flames - "Cloud Connected" 6. Dark Tranquility - "Cathode Ray Sunshine" 7. Mr. Lif - "Pulse Cannon" 8. Stone Sour - "Tumult" 9. Black Sabbath - "Fairies Wear Boots" (live from the Reunion album) 10. Iron Maiden - "Where Eagles Dare" Tuesday, August 20, 2002
Had a little fun at the campground the other night, Jen, Ed, Mike and I had a cabin at good ol' Scrubby Pines near Long Beach Island, courtesy of Jen's grandparents.......it was pretty nice, had a TV, air conditioning, a fridge......no TV remote though, so we were really roughing it. But regardless, it was a fun getaway.
Good luck to Ed and Mike, who are heading to Italy for a bit to visit family and see some sights....hope they have a safe and enjoyable trip to the old country. Penn State was recently named the among the country's top "party schools," coming in at #4 in the Princeton Review's annual list.......we are behind only Indiana, Clemson, and Alabama........here's hoping that after this year we can claim that number one spot, lets go Nittany Lions!!! Anybody up for a game of Pac-Chunk?
Time's running out on the summer, gotta have some fun times before its all over.......we went to Applebee's last night, led to believe that appetizers were half off after 10 p.m. but it was all just a lie, a big fat lie. Had a good time regardless, though.....just wanna say good luck to Matt and Al, who went up to Bloomsburg U. today....hopefully they'll graduate, someday... Headin to my cuz Sean's 13th bday party today, then goin down to LBI for a little camping trip with some pals, tell you about it when I get back. Saturday, August 17, 2002
A very special birthday wish for my cousin Sean, happy bday big guy....
I'm gettin a little fed up with the news lately, it seems like every day there's another story about missing kids, I just read somethin about some missing British girls found dead, its just gettin outta hand and its pretty revolting.....and then there's stuff about the West Nile virus, and not to mention those big babies, aka Major League Baseball and their damn strike date, damn them and their average $2 and a half million salaries to hell. Sorry, that was my rant for the day, I'm gonna go listen to some Sabbath, peace. Friday, August 16, 2002
***CONCERT REVIEW***
Who: SLAYER, Soulfly, In Flames aka the "H82K2 Tour" When: August 15th, 2002 Where: The Electric Factory, Philadelphia PA Attendees: Me, Big Al Ears are still ringing, just got home a little while ago, but I figure I'll review while its still fresh in my mind. We had a nice spot up top in the balcony so we were safe from the crazy pits, and we had a great time. For once, all the bands on the bill were good, I'll take you through each one... In Flames: First off, we missed the opener, Down the Sun, but who really cares. Then In Flames comes out in these matching white outfits and long hair, and pretty much blew us away. They were so good....they only played like a half hour set of course but they packed in some good stuff, the highlights for me were the opener "Bullet Ride" and "Clayman", they also did some new tunes (including "Cloud Connected" and "System", which was awesome) from their forthcoming cd, Reroute to Remain, out in late Sept. I had heard these guys put on a great live show, of course if this was in their home country (Sweden) or somewhere else in Europe everybody would know who they were and they'd be headlining a tour......they're not that well known in the States but they should be, because they are awesome. If you get a chance to see these guys in concert, do so. Or at least check out their cds, I recommend Clayman and Whoracle. Soulfly: This was my fourth time seeing these guys live (and a whopping 7th time for Alan) and once again they didn't disappoint. This time they were promoting their latest cd, 3, (out in stores now)........they started off with a nice one-two punch of heavy tunes from the new disc, "Downstroy" and "Seek N Strike"....also did some stuff from lead singer Max Cavalera's previous band, Sepultura, ie "Refuse/Resist" and "Roots Bloody Roots," and of course past Soulfly tunes like "Eye For An Eye", "Jumpdafuckup", "Fire", etc etc.....drummer Roy Mayorga, a previous Soulfly member who recently rejoined the group, was pretty damn good. Of course the band did their usual tribal jam session on these big drums.....and one interesting part, they did this track "Tree of Pain" from the new cd, it features Max's teenage stepson Richie and this black female soul singer on vocals....it sounds pretty cool on the album (its one of my faves) and it was neat for the kid to come out and sing, but I'm not too sure about when they brought the girl out at the end of the song, let's just say some of the Slayer faithful weren't too amused. But all in all, a pretty good showing. Slayer: It was my first time seeing these guys, and the only way I can describe them is brutal, absolutely brutal. The fans were so hardcore, and despite being pretty annoying, they were not disappointed. The biggest thing I learned from seeing Slayer live is that Dave Lombardo freakin rules!!......he is the original Slayer drummer, he was out of the band for quite some time but he hooked up with them just for this tour......damn he was good. Oh, and guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King were insane.....I have to say I like Hanneman better than King, but both those guys are masters of sick metal riffs. So fast! So heavy! They started with the intro from the new cd God Hates Us All, and this is how crazy their fans were, they were already moshing! Its just this weird intro thing, its not even really a song........then they ripped into two new ones, "Disciple" and I think "Exile", both of which were excellent....some other highlights included old favorites like "Stain of Mind," "War Ensemble", "Dead Skin Mask," "Spill the Blood," "Mandatory Suicide", "Postmortem," "Raining Blood," and my personal fave, "Seasons in the Abyss"....they just didn't let up for one minute, no BS, just pure non-stop aggression.....its not for the faint of heart, believe me, I'm just glad we weren't down near the mosh pits cuz they were pretty crazy. I don't know if I'd go to see Slayer specifically again, an hour and a half of live straight-up brutal speed metal can get a little tiresome, but it was definitely an experience to see these guys at work, because, as they say, Slayer f-in' rules!! Alright I need some sleep. Wednesday, August 14, 2002
Slight makeover for jay's world....lemme know what you think.
Some great videos last night on MTV2 at about 2 am: Machine Head's "From This Day", Killswitch Engage's "My Last Serenade", Hatebreed's "I Will Be Heard", Soundgarden's "Outshined", and AC/DC's "Jailbreak" (with Bon Scott! from 1974!) All I've been doing the past few days is laying around like some kinda welfare whore, I feel like such a bum but I'm just not motivated to do anything, including work......but that's gonna change, tonight's my last thing for the Trentonian, I'm covering some women's summer basketball thing at Trenton High, oh joy....then I work at the bike shop the following two days, then most likely I'll be off until I return to school next Thursday. Slayer / Soulfly / In Flames concert tomorrow.......should be awesome. Tuesday, August 13, 2002
ESPN came out with a little preview for the upcoming PSU football season - read it here. It's not bad, had some positives.....can't wait for this season.
I heard the latest Ja Rule/Metallica collaboration (or "collabo" as I like to call it) entitled "We Did It Again"..........horrible, absolutely horrible. I don't know what those Metallica guys were thinking, I guess the title refers to alienating and angering their fans, yup they did it again.......still, earlier today I was listening to their "Live Shit" cd from way back in like '91 or so, and I made up my mind: I'm gonna see them live on their next tour. I've never seen them and I know it would definitely be a great show. As long as Ja Rule and his crew doesn't show up. Anybody wanna go with me? Speaking of music, here's some jams for y'all: 1. Fear Factory - "Echoes of Innocence" (from Concrete, the new cd of unreleased material) 2. Kelis - "I Hate You So Much Right Now" 3. Meshuggah - "Straws Pulled at Random" 4. James and Bobby Purify - "I'm Your Puppet" (thanks Ed) 5. Aerosmith - "Adam's Apple" 6. The Who - "Sparks" 7. Skid Row - "18 and Life" 8. Foghat - "Slow Ride" 9. Throwdown - "No One" 10. Shadows Fall - "Thoughts Without Words" I updated my about me section, in case anyone cares. I'm doing a little research for this fantasy football thing that me and my dad entered, maybe somebody can help me out.....I'm trying to compile a list of the top 80 running backs and I'm not sure who should be 80th on my depth chart, Cory Schlesinger or Nick Goings. Help! I'm all set for this week's Tecmo Superbowl draft.....we're gonna have a little league competition and we're creating our own teams for the game. I'm the Seattle Seahawks and I've got the second pick so my choice is a no-brainer: Rodney Peete, baby. Monday, August 12, 2002
Fun times in the Bronx yesterday....
Great Yankees game yesterday, New York beat Oakland, 8-5, avoiding the three-game sweep. The highlights: my dad cursing at some Puerto Rican dude who almost hit our car, a fat guy jamming out to Queen's "We Will Rock You" while stuck in traffic, home runs by Shane Spencer and Alfonso Soriano (who's now one homer shy of being baseball's first second baseman to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases), a diving catch and subsequent head-bashing against the outfield wall by A's centerfielder Terrence Long, a nice double by backup catcher Chris Widger who got a rare start, and three RBIs from Jason Giambi...... Oh, and the best part: coming out of the stadium we were walking to our car, when all of the sudden me and my bro stop because we see someone who looks familiar - Andy Pettite! He was standing in this lot about to get in his car, so we took some quick pictures before some cops made us move along.......then all of the sudden, who else appears, but 6-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens! We snapped some shots of him, then realized a bunch of people were standing behind a barricade waiting for more players to come out, we found their personal parking lot, as well as the team buses for Oakland......so we waited around with the camera and eventually saw Yankees Ramiro Mendoza, Mariano Rivera, Chris Widger, Mike Mussina, David Wells, Orlando Hernandez, Alfonso Soriano, Derek Jeter, Rondell White, Raul Mondesi, plus Oakland's Barry Zito, David Justice, Terrence Long, Miguel Tejada, Ray Durham, Eric Chavez and coach Art Howe, plus Yankees skipper Joe Torre and coaches Mel Stottlemyre and Don Zimmer, not to mention broadcasters John Sterling, Michael Kaye and Charley Steiner...........I took pictures of all of them, only to find out later that my mom loaded the film incorrectly into her camera, thus rendering my efforts useless. But it was quite an experience, and whenever I take my next trip to the stadium I'll be sure to hang around that exit afterwards. But then again, those big babies are just going to strike anyway so I might not ever be going back to a major league game ever again. Saturday, August 10, 2002
In the midst of a fun-filled weekend....
On Thursday, Mike, Al and I ventured down to beautiful Atlantic City for a night of gambling....we had a complimentary room and food (courtesy of my folks, avid gamblers themselves) so we were free to spend our money at will at the Trump Marina and Harrah's casino....we all pretty much lost, I came out ahead in the end but only because my dad spotted me some of his winnings, and with that I was able to play the pricey $1 machines, on which I won $100, allowing me to break even.......but anyway we had a great time, and AC will definitely see us again in the future. Then yesterday, Jen and I attended the Warped Tour in Camden, I had gotten her tix for her bday......it was pretty cool, we got to see MXPX and New Found Glory but we couldn't stay for the whole time, we couldn't bear the heat and the crowds, not to mention the unfathomably high prices for parking and warm Powerade.......but we had a good time overall and that's what counts. Later that evening I treated Jen to a fine mexican dinner at Chevy's with my AC winnings, and the food was excellent. Tomorrow afternoon the family and I are headed to the Bronx to check out the Yankees-Oakland game, it'll be an unprecedented second visit to the stadium in one summer, should be a good game.....unlike last night's 16-inning debacle, I stayed up till the crack of dawn only to watch the Yanks lose. Oh well, there's always the world series...... Wednesday, August 07, 2002
I want to send out very special birthday wishes to two of my good friends, Ms. Karen Ehrhardt, and Mr. Michael Antenucci, who celebrates his 21st today. Happy bday guys, and I wish you many more.
That's all you're getting. Tuesday, August 06, 2002
A big shoutout to my man Justin, doin his thing over in Australia......he's like a professional Irish dancer believe it or not and he's on tour over there for a few weeks, I give him mad props.
Last night I joined Ed's online Tecmo football league, play begins in September........its gonna be great, although I need to brush up on my skillz. **CD alert: check out Mr. Lif's Emergency Rations and Filter's The Amalgamut........just givin you a heads up. Finally, I have some more song recommendations......I've done probably like 50 of these and I seriously doubt that anyone ever took the time to listen to one of these songs.....but you owe yourself to check out new music, because music is what makes the world go 'round, or something like that. Anyway, at least DL the first one, its a classic, and sooooo funny. 1. Deion Sanders - "Must Be the Money" 2. Neurotica - "Genius to Lunatic" 3. Yes - "Roundabout" 4. Fatlip - "Whats Up Fatlip?" 5. Beyond the Embrace - "Release" 6. Mr. Lif - "Heavy Artillery" 7. Soil - "Halo" 8. Eric B and Rakim - "Lyrics of Fury" 9. Men Without Hats - "Safety Dance" 10. Stone Sour - "Blotter" Classic Quote: "I've been visiting a psychiatrist for some time now. He plays mind games. He asks things like 'do you masturbate'? and I say 'do you breathe?'." - Ozzy Osbourne, 1975 Monday, August 05, 2002
I just spent the past three days driving back and forth from Camden to cover Hamilton Post 31 in the american legion playoffs....they kept winning, so I had to keep going. Finally they lost today so my work is done for a while......it was pretty cool though, and the stadium there, Campbell's Field, is pretty sweet, its pretty much the same as Waterfront Park in Trenton except its got the Ben Franklin Bridge and the waterfront just beyond the outfield wall....neat.
Check out pictures from my Ocean City vacation, Jen posted them on her site........there are some real good ones, there's a few pages too, be sure to look for the picture of me and Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith. Saturday, August 03, 2002
Last night, Jen and I saw Signs, the latest film from director M. Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable) which stars Mel Gibson. I have a feeling that some people might be disappointed with this movie, being that its not a huge mindless special effects action bonanza...but it really is a damn good movie. And creepy as hell too...seeing it in the theater, it was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, without going too overboard it really scared the crap out of me. After seeing Shyamalan's first two big-budget movies and now this one, I have to say that he is a pretty talented director. Signs is definitely a good flick and I suggest you check it out.
I also took a trip to the beach yesterday....Jen, Sean, Meghan and I went down to beautiful Belmar, NJ and had a great time...the water was enjoyable despite the "old potatoes/fecal matter" smell and was a nice break from the current heat wave. Today I'm headed to Camden, NJ to cover Hamilton Post 31's playoff game in the American Legion state tournament......should be a good game, theyre a pretty good team composed of players from Steinert HS (my alma mater).....the game is at Campbell's Field, home of the Camden Riversharks minor league baseball team, so that should be cool to check out. |
