****News Alert****
I have a very unfortunate announcement .... due to the recently announced bankruptcy of Blogger, Inc. and its partner, Pyra Labs (the companies that host this and other blogspot sites) I've been informed that beginning Friday (April 5) all blogger-affiliated sites and servers will become defunct. Basically what that means is that Jay's World, at least in its current form, will be no more. I'll save what I can, although with my very extensive archive almost everything from this site will no longer be available on the net. I'd consider moving to another web host, but I don't exactly have the money to pay for a domain .... perhaps I'll move to another free site, but it could take awhile .... I just wanted to inform you, my loyal readers, and let you know that I'll do everything I can ... please join me in a moment of silence for Jay's World .... :( Sunday, March 30, 2003
Snow? What the hell?
Woke up this morning to find a few inches outside .... and here I thought it was spring, it's been like 60 degrees or so for a while, then suddenly today it's 30 .... this sucks .... Anyway, had a good time at The Rick's (as always) last night, another Collegian party .... hopefully there will be a few more before it's all over ... Boy did the PSU women's basketball team blow it or what, got blown out by almost 30 points against Tennessee .... my girl Kelly Mazzante really choked in the first half, only three points ... this team just cannot win on the road .... maybe next year in Kelly's senior season they'll put it all together and go all the way .... Luckily I didn't have to go in to work today, I didn't really feel like walkin out there in this snowy ass weather ... haha, I said "ass weather" ... anyway, I'm ready to breeze through this week, Jen and I are goin to Canada next weekend, Niagra Falls to be exact ... should be awesome, can't wait ... On Friday I was supposed to have a test in Landscape Architecture but, turns out, the teaching assistant somehow screwed up and didn't show up with the exams, so we got sent home and the exam was moved to tomorrow .... the professor sent out this email apologizing and everything, check out an excerpt: Before I explain my next step, let me say thank you to those of you who were able to evaluate the situation calmly and in the context as being one of life's unsettling moments. I hope this is the only experience like this you have as a college student. But in reality life will throw you occasional curves (I hope it is only occasional) that are unexpected, uncontrollable and upsetting. Finding the inner calm for those situations is a sign of grace and maturity. So thanks to those who adopted such an attitude, you graciously helped me through an equally frustrating and irritating situation. To those of you who felt the need to express your immediate anger (either in person or in e-mail), I wish for you greater restraint in future situations. Haha pretty funny huh .... the good news is, she decided to drop our lowest exam grade (there are only three exams, mind you) .... doesn't really affect me yet since I pulled a 95 on the first one, but it sure helps out people like my bud Jeff Rice, who mustered a 63 or something ..... I'll leave you with a few songs I'm currently jamming: 1. Ozzy Osbourne & Lita Ford - "If I Close My Eyes Forever" 2. Judas Priest - "Last Rose of Summer" 3. Eric Clapton - "I Shot the Sheriff" 4. Opeth - "Closure" 5. Dave Chappelle (as R. Kelly) - "(I Wanna) Pee On You" 6. Soilwork - "Overload" 7. Chef from South Park - "Chocolate Salty Balls (PS I Love You)" 8. Tom Petty - "Breakdown" 9. Metallica - "One" 10. Rob Zombie - "Dragula" Saturday, March 29, 2003
Well the week is finally over, thank god ... I got my stories basically done for class and stuff, and one ran in the Collegian, check it out, it's called Ex-football player runs the show at State College High, it's about the Athletic Director at the local high school, he used to play for Penn State, I've been told that it's pretty good ....
Last night Jen and I made a grueling drive up to Pittsburgh to check out my possible apartment for next summer .... the city seemed cool, what little I saw of it, and the place is alright, it's old but it could be fixed up to be pretty cool, there are a few negatives but mostly it seems like what I'm lookin for, plus my roommate would hardly ever be there, so that's dope ... I'm just glad I got that mostly over with .... Today I'm goin to a Penn State equestrian show for this other story I'm workin on, that should be neat .... then later it's party-time at The Rick's, should be dope also .... Don't forget to check out the Lady Lions as they take on Tennessee today at 2:30 in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA women's basketball tournament .... the Lady Vols are 42-0 at home in the tourney so this could be a huge upset .... if Penn State wins, that is .... it's worth watchin anyway .... and if you don't know about the Lady Vols, read this column by the aforementioned Rick, as he explains why Tennessee coach Pat Summitt is the best around .. Oh and here's one more plug for the Collegian, take a look at this article by my bud Chris Korman, it's about former NBA player Armon Gilliam, who took over as head basketball coach of Penn State Altoona, subsequently cut almost everyone on the team, then got bashed on a website by someone who may or may not be a former player and the son of PSU women's basketball coach Rene Portland .... it's an intriguing story and definitely worth a look ... Tuesday, March 25, 2003
It's turning out to be a hectic week so far and it's only Monday night ... I'm working on various stuff story-wise for class and the Collegian, among other things ... a good part of tomorrow will be spent trying to get in touch with people on the phone, you know how that can go ... and of course I work the next three consecutive nights, which only complicates matters ... at least one story is finished, and I'll bring that to you as soon as it runs this week .... more of them will be done soon and then I'll have some time to catch my breath ....
Anyway, how are everyones' brackets looking? I've only got nine teams left in this Sweet 16 ... but luckily I do have seven of my Elite 8 as well as all my Final Four teams still alive .... I'm still in the hunt. On the women's side, Penn State destroyed Holy Cross in their first round game at the Bryce Jordan Center, 64-33 .... the fourth-seeded Lady Lions take on No. 5 South Carolina tomorrow night at 5 p.m., should be quite a contest ... if they survive they're heading down to Tennessee to take on the always-powerful Lady Volunteers, it could be another Sweet 16 exit just like last year against UConn.... but we'll see. Some discouraging news lately about the war with Iraq, first we hear about a U.S. soldier attacking his own comrades with grenades, then at least seven POW's are taken by the Iraqis and there's questions about their treatment .... finally today we've learned that there's rumors that Iraq will employ chemical weapons if the U.S. forces advance beyond a designated imaginary line drawn around Baghdad ... and who said this was going to be an easy war? It just kind of makes my bitching about stories and work seem insignificant to the challenges kids my age and younger are facing right now .... Saturday, March 22, 2003
Alright it's time to take a little break from the news reporting, since our correspondents have been kicked out of Baghdad and there haven't been any major developments lately ....
This whole war business has been crazy, between the 24 hour coverage and March Madness I've been glued to the TV for the past few days ... hopefully things will come to a swift end over there without any more loss of life .... I have a feeling that the war should be quickly won by the U.S., for one simple reason: this guy. Watch that video, trust me ... we simply can't lose with him on our side ..... (video courtesy Ed Slavin) ... Rangers beat the stupid Flyers today, they're still in this thing (barely) ... like Jesse Jackson says, keep hope alive ... Friday, March 21, 2003
BAGHDAD, Iraq The United States' "shock and awe" campaign has begun with massive military air and ground strikes in Iraq's capital city. Jay's World correspondants have been expelled from the country. We'll have more information as it develops. Thursday, March 20, 2003
KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait United States troops are moving deeper into Iraq as the initial military air strikes contine to hit Iraqi cities. The so-called "shock and awe" attacks promised by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld have been put on hold as the U.S. assesses potential damage to Iraqi leaders. An American military helicopter is reported to have crashed near the Kuwaiti border, and at least some of the 16 passengers are said to have been killed. Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters have gathered in cities throughout the U.S. in an effort to end the American conflict with Iraq.

BAGHDAD, Iraq Several explosions and anti-aircraft fire were reported in at least three locations in Iraq's capital city at about 1 p.m. EST. U.S. Marines are said to have crossed the Iraqi border to begin operations in what may be the opening round of a full-scale invasion. Jay's World correspondants are on the scene gathering information, please stay tuned for updates.
INDIANAPOLIS March Madness went on almost as scheduled today as Holy Cross and Marquette kicked off the 2003 NCAA men's basketball tournament. Opening-round television coverage of the tournament was switched from CBS to ESPN because of continuing developments in Iraq.
KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait Orange flames have been seen rising just beyond the Kuwait-Iraq border, causing speculation that Iraqi soldiers may have begun burning oil wells in a last-ditch effort to slow the attack of U.S. soldiers, The Associated Press reports. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld addressed the media in a press conference at about 11:30 EST and warned that such actions were crimes against the Iraqi people and would not go unpunished. Rumsfeld would not say if a U.S.-led ground invasion of Iraq would begin soon. He also said that military officials are still analyzing videotaped footage of Saddam Hussein's appearance on Iraqi television last night in an effort to determine if it was really Hussein or a body-double.
Stay tuned to Jay's World for continuing updates on the conflict in Iraq.
***THIS JUST IN:
BAGHDAD, Iraq The United States military began operations at around 9 p.m. EST Wednesday night, firing at least 40 missiles at unkown targets in Iraq's capital city. U.S. officials say the attack was a response to a "window of opportunity" for quickly striking at Iraq's government leadership in an effort to kill Saddam Hussein. The actions come shortly after Hussein's 8 p.m. deadline to leave Iraq expired. The Iraqi leader, apparently unharmed by the U.S. attacks, appeared on Iraqi television hours later, warning that his nation would be victorious in a war with "Jr. Bush" and the "Zionist" America. Stay tuned to Jay's World for continuing updates on the conflict in Iraq. Wednesday, March 19, 2003
So who's ready for war? Just about 8 hours and counting until all hell breaks loose ... maybe we should have another protest here in State College as a last-ditch effort to stop it ..... stay tuned to Jay's World for continuing coverage of the Iraqi conflict ....
What better way to take your mind off these world events than a little March Madness? It's that time again ... I'm pretty excited, I've watched more college hoops this year than probably ever before, so I'm set .... got my brackets filled out for the Collegian pool, here's a look at my Final Four picks: Kentucky, Duke, Syracuse and Texas, with Texas winning it all in an upset. I know it's a little far-fetched but hey, that's what it's all about .... tomorrow I don't have class so it'll be nonstop TV watching hopefully, unless this whole war business interrupts it ... hopefully they'll move the games to MTV, my friend Mike is an intern there, he'll be doing play-by-play of the Xavier-Troy State game with Gideon Yago and Mandy Moore .... Speakin of b-ball, the illustrious Jerry Dunn era ended this week when Dunn resigned as the PSU men's bball coach after back-to-back seven-win seasons ... it's a shame, Jerry seems like a good guy, and he'll get a cushy job somewhere in the program at least ... it was just time for a change for this program, now they need to bring in a big name (it's certainly not a longshot) to attract some talented recruits ... I'll keep you posted if I get any inside info. Another era is coming to an end back in my hometown .... it looks like Anthony's Bicycle Trail, my former employer, is going out of business .... as you may or may not know, my dad and grandpop founded that store and operated it for 23 years, before Anthony took over about seven years ago .... the bike business has been on a steady decline, and it's just time for him to get out of it ... hopefully someone will keep the bike shop running to continue the glory, but that's doubtful ... it's sad, that place has been a piece of my childhood for a long time now and I hate to see it go, I'll always have the memories though .... good luck to Anthony, wherever life may take him ... Last night I had a pretty whack dream ... my dog Maggie was supposed to be getting an award, so I went upstairs to get her, only to find, to my shock and horror, that she was losing all her teeth, they were just falling out ... it was weird as hell. Perhaps this is some kind of premonition about the coming war with Iraq, a symbol of America "losing its bite", so to speak, as it prepares for conflict ...... or maybe my dreams are just F-ed up .... must have been that green cocaine from St. Patty's Day .... Finally, check out this website .... it can read your mind. Monday, March 17, 2003
Ok its time for the Spring Break wrap-up, oh and happy St. Patty's Day to all the fake Irish people ...
It was a good break overall, we had some decent weather, got to relax and made a little money, played half a season of NHL 95 (40-2 with the Rangers) .... got to see my friends Karen and Mike so that was fun also, although not as much fun as some other people had on their break: RUalan80: i was in florida the whole time RUalan80: i was wasted every night RUalan80: it was good Anyway, now I'm back for the home stretch here at PSU, getting back into the swing of things, some more stories to work on for class and the Daily Collegian, back to work ... hopefully the nice weather will continue for these last few weeks ... oh and by the way we're probably going to war today or tomorrow, check out Bush's speech tonight at 8 for all the juicy details ... There's a new Beastie Boys song that talks about the war on Iraq .... download it.

Spring Break continues ....
It's been a relatively busy one so far, I've been working on about five stories simultaneously today for class / the Collegian / the Trentonian .... I'll have one in Friday's Trentonian on a Rutgers baseball player, look for that .... Probably the worst part of journalism is trying to talk to people on the phone, for some reason they seem to either not answer or not call you back .... it's a harsh lesson we all must learn sometime .... The other night I covered the Princeton-Penn men's basketball game, that was pretty cool, I'd never seen an Ivy League game before .... Speakin of basketball, check out Penn State against Indiana today at 5 on ESPN2 in the Big Ten tournament, maybe the Lions can pull off the upset again .... maybe ... it could happen .... stop laughing. The Rangers picked up Anson Carter the other day at the trading deadline ... in case you don't know, he's probably the best black hockey player in the NHL right now, that might not be saying much but he's also got more goals than anyone on the Rangers beside Alexei Kovalev .... New York plays tonight but unfortunately WE DON'T GET THE MSG NETWORK ANYMORE here at home thanks to our idiotic cable providers .... but there's some good news, WE WILL BE GETTING THE YES NETWORK for all the Yankees games ... unfortunately I'll be in Pittsburgh for most of the summer. Oh well, at least I'll be able to see the Pirates, I know they are a championship-caliber baseball team.... Monday, March 10, 2003
I'm covering the MAAC Tournament finals tonight, Manhattan vs. Fairfield ... watch it at 7 on ESPN tonight if you're interested... Sunday, March 09, 2003
Spring Break update ....
Yes that's right, it's my final Spring Break, I'm posting live from exotic and beautiful Hamilton, NJ right now .... just gonna enjoy the week off, maybe do a little work for the Trentonian .... those who will be in H-Town between now and next weekend should get in touch with me to arrange a time for chilling .... Congrats to the PSU men's basketball team for upsetting Indiana today, 74-66 on Senior Night (25 points from Jan Jagla! It's like bizzarro world) ... it's too bad that the Nittany Lions (7-20, 2-14 Big Ten) saved their biggest win for the weekend that Penn State students are gone for break and the Collegian isn't even printing and can't cover it .... Also, good luck to the PSU women's team, the Lady Lions take on Ohio State tomorrow in the Big Ten tournament ... How about the Falcons picking up Peerless Price .... look for big things from them next year. How much you want to bet Michael Vick will be the No. 1 fantasy player next season? In other NFL news, the Giants released Jason Sehorn ... it's the end of an era (the White Men Can Play Cornerback Era) .... they still gotta shell out $8 million for him next year, that hurts, but I guess in the long run it'll pay off for both parties ... Well I'm gonna go play some NHL 95 on the ol' Sega (greatest game ever) .... peace Thursday, March 06, 2003
Had some bad luck so far this week .....
First off, my beloved discman is broken. It appears to have gotten bent up in my jacket pocket while I was sitting at the women's bball game, the audio jack part is all busted up so you can't hear anything coming out now ..... hopefully this will be able to be fixed, this trusty discman has been with me for my entire college career and I'd hate to see it come to such a sad ending .... Then the other day I chipped my front tooth, one of the links in my watch was bent and I, like an idiot, was trying to bend it back into place with my teeth. Needless to say, this was a bad idea, because I've had bonding on my two front teeth since like the 6th grade when i hit them on a table and broke them .... anyway now my bonding is all f-ed up, I have a gap, and Jen is afraid to look at me ... oh and I also got a haircut slightly shorter than usual and everyone seems to think I am heading over to Iraq to fight Saddam .... basically if you didn't know better you'd think I was trying to alter my identity, I wish .... Finally, this morning I had to get up early and go get my car, and it turns out that some fools at the off-campus parking lot decided to shovel all the snow in the lot and pile it up behind my car ... I found about a 4-foot high pile of white stuff curiously behind only my car among the several hundred in the lot .... and of course I had to dig it out WITH A SCRAPER, it took me a good 20 minutes to get the pile small enough so that my car could back out ..... Luckily I made it in time for my appointment to interview the athletic director of State College Area H.S. for a story in class that will also go in the Collegian ... my colleague and friend The Rick accompanied me also because he's doing a story on the football coach .... look for those soon. Earlier today there was a protest here at Penn State, as well as many other schools around the country, so people could speak out against the pending war with Iraq .... they had a big walkout this afternoon and gathered at Old Main, then went down to the borough council to ask them to take an official stance against the war (as if this somehow is gonna stop Bush from sending bombers over there) ... boy I kinda feel like I'm living in the 60s except without the noble causes and tension and social upheaval and student unity ..... On a lighter note, check out this web page ... truly freakish. Then check out Ed's parody .... truly humorous. Also, check out this fat kid performing his new hit song, "The Superbowl is Gay" ... good stuff Finally, I can't forget to mention the Giants' big free agent pickup, return man extroadinaire Brian Mitchell, formerly of the rival Philly Iggles ... ask any Philly fan and they'll tell you he's on his way to the old folks fan ... ask them three months ago and they'll say he's the best returner in the league .... anyway, getting him from the division rivals is clutch, I love what the G-Men are doin thus far, resigning their two big free agents, Ike Hilliard and Luke Pettigout, to new deals and kickin "punter" Matt Allen to the door .... just can't wait for the draft ... Monday, March 03, 2003
Congratulations to the Penn State women's basketball team, 2002-03 Big Ten regular season champs ...
Time for the weekend wrap-up (because I know everyone who visits this site cares immensely about how I spend my weekends)... Had a pretty fun weekend, mostly just chilled with Jen, made some dinner ... we watched three good movies: 8 Mile (that new Eminem joint, better than expected), My Big Fat Greek Wedding (much better than I expected, pretty funny actually) and Grosse Point Blank (strange but in a good way, also funny) ... we recommend all three. Also went to Tony's Big Easy for the first time, the State College folks should check it out .... If you get a chance, check out future NFL star Larry Johnson's website .... it seems that he and some other Penn State football players are forming a record label (maybe) .... good luck with that fellas. I wanna give a shoutout to my main man Patrick Ewing, who had his jersey retired at the Garden over the weekend .... one of the NBA's all-time greats (despite not winning the championship, blah blah) ... he was truly a dominant center, we probably won't see the likes of him anymore ... thanks for the memories, Ew. |
