Good news for metalheads everywhere ... Webster's has added the word "headbanger" to its dictionary!
That's right, after over 20 years of use on the street, "headbanger" is now an acceptable term for both a hard rock musician and a fan .... pretty radical, huh. Tired of getting those annoying telemarketer phone calls? Check out this site, you can add your phone number to a national "do-not-call" list, virtually all U.S. companies won't be able to call anyone on the list for telemarketing, and each violation will cost them up to $11,000 .... or you could just do what Jerry Seinfeld does, tell them you're busy and ask if you can call them back at their home when it's more convenient. Apparently they're making a new Punisher movie ... hopefully it'll be better than that 80s version starring Dolph Lundgren. Friday, June 27, 2003
Hey how about an update?
Work is going well ... I've been doing about two pages a night at the Trib, it's not too bad ... I've mastered the baseball page and I'm becoming a real box score freak .... the traffic to work is still a bitch, especially when there are Pirates games (like tonight), and then when I get home it usually takes almost a half hour to find a "legal" parking spot near our place .... but overall the time is going pretty fast, a week from now my internship will be halfway over. Jen is having some fun at the Hampton Inn and also making some tips. She also has to wear a nametag that says "Jennifer" ... haha. My buddy Al-Dawg is coming up next week, we are hitting up the In Flames concert here at Pittsburgh's Club Laga, we'll also be taking a tour of PNC Park ... unfortunately we can't make it to a Pirates game but let's face it, the stadium itself is a lot cooler than the team anyway. I want to congratulate my brother Jord for graduating high school last week ... unfortunately Jen and I couldn't make it back home, but we wish him a fun summer and good luck at Rowan University next year ... our little man is all grown up! Just kidding. Did anyone check out the NBA Draft last night? How about LeBron James getting taken with the first pick, what a shocker huh??? Seriously though, did you see that former Steinert High School alum and Hamilton, N.J., native Dahntay Jones was taken by the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round? I figured the Duke (formerly Rutgers) standout would end up going pro but I didn't realize he was projected that high. I don't care much about him, but it is cool that a kid from my high school and town is an NBA player .... hopefully he'll have a decent career so he can come back and put some money into our community .... if not by building a state of the art gym for Steinert or a new community center, then at least throw some cash at the nearest Hummer dealer or strip club, show H-Town some love at least, kid. Finally went to a Pirates game yesterday, my buds Derek and Smokin D came up and we managed to get seats behind home plate .... PNC Park is real phat, it's a great place to check out a game ... unfortunately the Buccos lost to the Expos, 5-2 .... they've got a good foundation, they do need some relief pitching for sure, (some dude named Ron Calloway put the game away with a 2-run late-inning homer to the deepest part of the outfield yesterday) but with their devoted fans and their cool stadium and whatnot they deserve to have a winning team after 10+ years of mediocrity ....
We met up with another Collegian alum, Chris "Buzzsaw" Adamski, afterwards, he was covering the game for mlb.com ... checked out some kind of Pittsburgh Arts Fest, it was basically just a bunch of stands full of overpriced, greasy carnival food, and there was some whack band ... Check out who's on the cover of NCAA Gamebreaker 2004 for Playstation 2 .... Speakin of college football, looks like Alabama is trying to weasel its way out of a scheduled home and home series with Penn State in 2004 and 2005 ... seems that the Crimson Tide want to soften up their schedule since they're going through some hard times with scholarship probation and crap .... wusses. Wanna hear somethin ridiculous? Remember that crazy tattooed guy who ran on the field during a Royals' game a while back with his son and attacked a coach for no apparent reason other than he was drunk as hell? Well, that guy was hangin out at the U.S. Open over the weekend .... he was among a ton of people hired him to work on a trash cleanup crew, he was right near the golfers and whatnot .... one of the Open representatives had no idea that guy was even working there. Meanwhile I have to go through a blood test and have a background check done so I can do an internship at a newspaper, and this tattooed maniac with a violent criminal past gets hired to work near famous professional athletes without a second look .... something just isn't right with this picture.
The world just makes me scratch my head sometimes. Then I turn on some music. Speaking of which, check out these tunes, I've been enjoying them lately: 1. Jane's Addiction - "Just Because" 2. Fleetwood Mac - "Gypsy" 3. Metallica - "The Unnamed Feeling" 4. Black Label Society - "We Live No More" 5. Type O Negative - "I Don't Wanna Be Me" 6. Charlie Daniels Band - "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" 7. Ozzy Osbourne - "You Said It All (live)" 8. Superjoint Ritual - "Waiting For the Turning Point" 9. Journey - "Any Way You Want It" 10. Radiohead - "Where I End and You Begin" Tuesday, June 17, 2003
Congrats to Jen for finally getting a job ... she'll be working at the front desk of the Hampton Inn starting next week ... it's about time!
By the way, we heard our first real "yinz" the other day .... you know how people in Pittsburgh say "yinz" instead of like "y'all" or whatever .... this waitress was like "can I get yinz anything?" Then yesterday a woman at the office said "see yinz later" .... I've also been offered a "pop" (soda) several times but I'm kind of used to that, they also used that term in Nebraska .... some people are just crazy, man. Oh, and another thing .... WE'RE GETTING CABLE!! Welcome to the 21st century ..... Sunday, June 15, 2003
My good buddy and "just outside Pittsburgh" native Dustin "Smokin D" Dopirak paid us a visit yesterday, we ate lunch at some place called Filthy McNasty's and went to the top of Mt. Washington for a beautiful and romantic view of downtown Pittsburgh ... stay tuned to Jen's site for a few pics, they should be up soon.

On this date in 1994, the New York Rangers beat the Vancouver Canucks, 3-2, in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals .... New York ended a 54-year Cup drought as Brian Leetch was named Conn Smythe Trophy winner ....
Where have the years gone? In other news, there are talks of a new live-action special effects-filled Transformers movie in the works .... dope! Friday, June 13, 2003
Happy Friday the 13th!
To celebrate, I decided to FINALLY update my cd reviews page ... I'm gonna kick things off by reviewing Metallica's new album, St. Anger! CLICK HERE and enjoy .... Tuesday, June 10, 2003
Congrats to the New Jersey Devils, even though I am a Rangers fan, I give them props, mostly because I'm friends with a few Devs fans ... luckily I was able to watch the game on TV last night. We don't have cable here so we normally get only two channels (NBC and PBS), but since the game was on ABC I decided to move our set out on to the porch to get better reception, and it worked (sort of), well enough to see the game .... check out jen's site for a pic and some other shots of our apartment ..... I felt like a kid in the 1950s watching the Brooklyn Dodgers win the World Series on a black and white TV, it was kind of cool ....
Speaking of hockey and the Rangers, there's a rumor that New York is looking to deal Eric Lindros for Jaromir Jagr .... if that isn't the dumbest thing I've ever heard, I don't know what is. As if these boneheads haven't learned their lesson already, they're going to try to buy another playoff team by going out and getting aging superstars of the 90s with declining skills, high salaries and huge egos .... Jagr is set to make SIXTY-SIX MILLION DOLLARS over the next six years, the past two years he's tallied 79 and 77 points (his lowest totals for a full season since 1992), plus he's proven himself to be an overpaid baby who can't win anything on his own, how could he be expected to lead this chaotic team into the postseason, I ask you? Note to Rangers management: Get a clue, hire a good coach, trade away some high-priced veterans for good solid young role players and build a foundation for good teams for years to come ..... oh and another rumor had them hiring 69-year-old retired Scotty Bowman as coach, that'd be a great move morons, he's an old man and he's retired .... luckily that's probably false. Man I think they should just hire me, I'll have this team winning a Stanley Cup in two years, guaranteed. In other news, I'm in the midst of a four-day weekend .... even though I'm the new guy and I've only worked a week, somehow the schedule worked out that I'd have four consecutive days off, I'm starting to think maybe they just don't want me around ..... but anyway, I'm just gonna enjoy my mini-vacation until it's back to the grind on Thursday ..... now I'm gonna accompany Jen as she goes job-hunting. P.S. - I've reorganized my links and added some new ones, so give them a look. Be sure to check out the fotologs under "Photos", they're awesome, especially mine. Wednesday, June 04, 2003
PITTSBURGH Well I'm back from the heartland and now I'm settled into my new place in Steel City .... the Nebraska trip went well, went home to Jersey for a night and then I moved into my new apartment here over the weekend. Jen and I got the place all cleaned up, it's small and it's old, but it'll work for the next three months. Jen went home today, she's got a few more days of work back at Rita's and then she's comin back up for the rest of the summer, hopefully she'll get a job. As for me, I have a job, I started today at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review .... it went OK, it was a tad boring just sitting there for seven hours tonight watching this guy lay out two pages, but I think I'll get the hang of it and I'll be laying out pages and editing by myself in no time. I had to take care of all this paperwork, W4 forms and sexual harrassment policy handbooks and even my first drug test (I forgot to study) ..... don't know exactly what my schedule will be like but I know I'll be working full-time, and finally getting a somewhat steady paycheck, so that's good news.
Pittsburgh is a pretty strange place, especially the neighborhood we're living in, South Oakland (represent) which is near the Pitt campus ... it's very old, kind of run-down but not really a ghetto, plenty of students living around in various row houses and odd-shaped dwellings on these winding streets and hilltops, the roads are a real pain to navigate, mostly because they don't make any sense whatsoever, ie one way roads turning suddenly turning into two-way roads, or turning into different roads altogether, etc. .... downtown Pittsburgh, which is 5 minutes away, isn't much better, it's pretty confusing and a whole lot of traffic ... the parking situation is just atrocious, there's basically no where to park downtown other than these big lots where they rape you for like $4 every half hour you're parked ... and in Oakland parking is pretty scarce, you need a permit to park just about everywhere, and the goddamn parking authority has been jerking me around as I'm trying to get my permit, tomorrow I'm gonna have to try to convince them to give me one with my forged documents and all that. Anyway, this summer should be a pretty good experience, if nothing else .... I'll keep you posted. |
