More good news about my job .... it appears my good friend and colleague The Rick will be joining me at the Daily Record ... they had two positions open for the same job, and The Rick was selected for the other spot ... this is great news ... congrats to Rick, and I'm looking forward to the new gig even more.
Congrats are also in order for my bud Steve for getting into Seton Hall University ... good luck boss So I was checking out President Bush's speech the other day on TV, he was speaking in front of some Urban League thing here in Pittsburgh ... anyway, there's one point where he's talking about increasing opportunities for black families to own homes or something, and he goes "we have to deal with this problem, straight up." I couldn't stop laughing ... but you have to admit, he knows how to connect with his audience .... Finally here's something else that gave me a laugh, there was a story about how the University of Florida Gators came out with their annual football media guide, they paid some company to get a picture of a real alligator for the front of it, well it turns out the photo was actually a crocodile, not a gator ... too bad they didn't catch the mistake before they sent the media guides out to the public ... idiots. Well I'm back in Pittsburgh after a week's vacation back home .... had some good times, got to see my family and friends, hit up Dunkin Donuts and Friendly's (the H-town hotspots), went to Applebee's for some latenight karaoke (didn't sing, though), played with Jen's new cat (Jackson), went to NYC for dinner for my mom's birthday, also went crabbing in LBI with my dad and brother and got sunburnt, saw Pirates of the Caribbean (not bad) ....
...Best of all, I finally got a job, a real, permanent job .... starting later in August I'll be working at the Daily Record in Parsippany (Morris County) NJ .... I went for an interview earlier this week and apparently they liked me, so I'll be joining their sports copy desk as a copy editor/page designer .... it's a mid-sized paper owned by Gannett, and it's about an hour away from me, seems like it should be an enjoyable job with a lot of opportunities, so I'm really looking forward to it. Now I've just got about two and a half more weeks here in Pittsburgh until I become a true working man .... Thursday, July 17, 2003
Great news .... I'm coming home on Sunday for almost a week, even though I'm a lowly intern I get a week's vacation from work ... and even greater news, Jen was able to pull some strings and get some time off, so she'll be home for a few days too. H-Town here we come ...
Well the rumors came true, Armando Benitez was traded to the Yankees ... somehow I have a feeling this guy is going to end up tormenting me in the coming months ... it just has all the makings of a disaster, I would have rather seen the Yanks get Pittsburgh reliever Mike Williams and his 6-run ERA ... Yankee fans everywhere just have to keep their fingers crossed that Benitez doesn't blow it over the next few months before he walks at the end of the season ..... it's gonna be a bumpy ride. More baseball news, have you heard Barry Bonds' comments about Babe Ruth? He's saying he really wants to break the Babe's home run record so he'll finally be considered the greatest ever and no one will talk about Ruth anymore .... give me a break man, practically NO ONE cares about Bonds other than some Giants fans and people who have him on their fantasy teams.... Bonds will always be secondary to Ruth, who dominated his era, made baseball the American pasttime and and became a legend .... God I hate that guy. There's an interesting article on ESPN.com about this very topic, and I whole-heartedly agree. Wednesday, July 16, 2003
It's a day late, but ...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEN!!! I didn't get to post yesterday because we spent the day at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, go here for some cool pics Jen took .... Unfortunately I had to work last night, but we also celebrated the night before with dinner and a movie ... first we tried Dave and Busters, but they have a little known rule, if you're under 21 you have to be accompanied by someone 25 or older, which is pretty much BS, I mean it's a restaurant like any other ... but it turned out for the best because we ended up at a cool place called Rock Bottom Microbrewery where I got to taste six of their own beers and we enjoyed some delicious food .... then we went to the magnificent Loew's Theater and watched 28 Days Later, very strange, but a good horror movie you should check out ... but anyway, happy birthday Jen, you're finally a 20-something .... Hey how about that All-Star game? I only got to see bits and pieces, saw Roger Clemens pitch a 1-2-3 inning (he was added to the team only a day before the game, in a very shady manner, but that's another story) ... Jason Giambi ripped a nice homer to keep the AL in the game ... and best of all, the AL won, meaning the Yankees will get homefield advantage for the world series .... I don't really like the new rule change (why doesn't the best team just get homefield?) but I'll take it ... In other baseball news, the Yankees are close to landing a deal with Mets closer Armando Benitez ... my only question: Are they crazy? I mean I've seen this guy melt down too many times, I can just see him in a close game in the World Series losing it and walking in the winning run .... I'd rather stick with Juan Acevedo. You're not gonna believe this, but guess who Jen met the other day .... the one and only Sgt. Slaughter, former 4-time WWF Heavyweight Champion and the first real person immortalized by his very own G.I. Joe action figure! ... that's right, Sarge is staying in Pittsburgh at Jen's hotel, he was in town for back surgery .... Jen got to talk to him a few times ..... I'm so jealous! I told her "get me an autograph ... and that's an order!" but she's not alowed to. Damn!
In other news, Sausage-Gate 2003 continues, as the Pirates' Randall Simon was suspended for three games and fined $2,000 for whacking a girl in an Italian sausage costume ... Just ridiculous. The girl wasn't even hurt, nor did she press charges, it was all in fun, he apologized .... let it die! Friday, July 11, 2003
Finally got the car back .... final bill: $1431.24 .... but at least it works now (so far).
***Breaking news: legendary metal frontman Rob Halford is rejoining his original band, Judas Priest, for a world tour in 2004 .... great news for metal fans and homosexuals everywhere (Rob is gay) ... So have you heard about the whole Pittsburgh Pirates/Sausage controversy? The Buccos were in Milwaukee and they have these people dressed up in sausage costumes running around the field ... Randall Simon of the Pirates bopped the Italian Sausage on its giant head and it fell over ... turns out it was a 19-year-old girl who scraped her knees, Simon was arrested and fined like $400, but the girl decided not to press charges or anything ... it's all pretty hilarious, we had to stick around late the other night at the paper to get it on our front page .... funny stuff. Jen's birthday is on Tuesday, hope you all picked out some good presents .... oh and by the way, her new screenname is PSUJeni, make a note of that ... Friday, July 04, 2003
Happy Fourth everyone ....
Had a pretty rough day yesterday, I've been having some car troubles lately, it's been overheating, so I had it fixed twice last week and figured everything was fine. Then, it overheated again yesterday ... turns out it needs a new head gasket. Price estimate: $1,100. Plus, I won't have a car until late next week most likely, which means I have to take the bus to work and rely on the kindness of my co-workers to get a ride home every night. This SUCKS. The day before yesterday wasn't as bad ... Alan came up for a short-lived visit, he had to leave early the next day to get to work. Jen and I got to show him around downtown, we visited PNC Park, although we didn't have time for an official tour or a game .... we also ate at Pittsburgh's famed "Big O", the Original Hotdog Shop - best known for "the world's best fries" and "the world's best latenight shootings" .... Jen's got some pics of our day on her site, check them out .... Al and I also hit up a concert that night, so without further adieu I give you another world-famous.... ***CONCERT REVIEW*** Who: IN FLAMES, Chimaira, Soilwork, Unearth When: July 2, 2003 Where: Club Laga, Pittsburgh, PA Attendees: Me, the Al-Dawg Hell of a show! First time at Club Laga, which is a little hole in the wall on the third floor of a building not far from my apartment, but we were fairly impressed ... Unearth was a sort-of hardcore/metal band, pretty amateurish, but a good effort I guess. They looked more like some kind of pop-punk/Strokes ripoff band. Soilwork, I really like this fan so I knew all their songs ... in case you don't know they (like In Flames) are a melodic-death band from Sweden ... they played mostly new stuff from their last two albums, really catchy and very good live. The guitarists were quite good, as was the frontman "Speed" Strid, I have to say I really enjoyed them. Then came Chimaira, another hardcore/metal band, I hadn't heard much of their stuff at all prior to the concert, so I was expecting them to be a little less metal than they were .... they were pretty heavy though, and better than I expected, which is always nice. The lead singer was kind of a dick to Alan when he went up to talk to him after the show, but whatever. The crowd was pretty into them, the moshers were particularly stupid also, which was annoying. Some dude with long hair kept headbanging in front of me and getting his nasty hair in my face - also annoying. Then finally, the mighty In Flames .... if you haven't heard this band, you need to check them out. Excellent musicians, and they put on a great show. It was the second time I saw them, the first was last summer when they opened for Slayer ... it was much better seeing them headline at a smaller place. Most of the songs sounded excellent live ... they played alot of their newest cd, 2002's Reroute to Remain, also some older stuff like "Clad in Shadows" and stuff from Whoracle .... the highlights had to be "Behind Space" (heavy!!!) and "Pinball Map" .... they closed with "Colony," which came as somewhat of a surprise ... but overall it was a great show, and I'll definitely see them again sometime. As for Alan, he's on his way to Syracuse as we speak to see them yet again at Hellfest. |
