Hey, long time no post .... Well I'm back in NJ finally, all done with Pittsburgh ... it was an interesting summer, to say the least, my internship was relatively fun and the people were nice to me for the most part, a bunch of them even took me out to lunch on my last day there, that was cool ... But I'm just glad to be out of there honestly, and holding a "real job" ...
Yup that's right, I started work this week at the Daily Record in Parsippany (Morris County) NJ .... it hasn't been too bad, I get to work with my bud The Rick and a few other folks who have been pretty cool .... it sucks having to drive for over an hour to get to work, but other than that it's decent .... I started out slow, doing the baseball page and agate page (you know, with all the little standings and crap), but by my fourth day I did the front sports page by myself, and I did it again last night. They really give you a lot of freedom, and it seems like they trust me to do a good job, so I can't complain with that .... It's good being back in Jersey, but unfortunately, Jen went back up to Penn State this week for her RA training, so that sucks .... I miss her a lot, but hopefully I'll be back up to ol' State College very soon ..... Finally, happy birthday wishes for my bro Jord, who turned 19 yesterday .... he's going up to Rowan University next week for the start of his college career, and I wish him all the best .... Hey how about that massive power failure today, crazy stuff ... luckily Pittsburgh was spared, but it did make its way out to Cleveland and Michigan and stuff .... must have been crazy in NYC, what with people being stranded on the island after work and everything ...
Anyway, today I went to the Pirates game against St. Louis ... alone .... some of my buds were supposed to come up but couldn't make it, I was still in a baseball mood so I decided to check it out .... I got a decent seat but it was wayyyy up top in Row Y (here's a hint, there's no Z) .... decent game though, the Cards' Albert Pujols continued his hitting streak (28 games, longest in the majors this year), Tino Martinez went yard, plus Pirates manager Lloyd McLendon was thrown out after an animated argument with the home plate umpire .... Buccos were losing 4-1 until the ninth, they came back to make it 4-3 but couldn't hold on and that was the final. I'll say this, PNC Park is marvelous and you should check it out if you ever get the chance. Tomorrow is my last day of work, I can't wait, hopefully they'll throw me a big party or something .... then my family and Jen will be up here this weekend to help me move out, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing them, as well as getting out of here. Then on Monday, the next chapter of the continuing Jay's World saga begins .... Wednesday, August 13, 2003
RIP Herb Brooks, the legendary hockey coach who orchestrated the greatest upset in U.S. sports history, as he led the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" Olympic hockey team to a stunning victory over the Russians in Lake Placid, N.Y. ... the country was in the grips of a Cold War with the former Soviet Union, which became the setting for a matchup between the fresh out of college Americans vs. the most dominant hockey power in the world. The Americans won in thrilling fashion, securing their places in sports history, and Brooks is credited as being the main reason for their greatness.
Here's a sad (and strange) note, the weird saga of deceased baseball legend Ted Williams continues ... as you may or may not know, when Williams - maybe the greatest hitter ever - died last year, his daughter and his whacko publicity hound son, John Henry Williams, had the body cryogenically frozen .... many believe that Williams never consented to this and his signature was forged on some legal documents, supposedly the family wanted to "be together at a future time," but some believe John Henry hoped to sell his DNA for a huge profit .... new reports suggest that a portion of his DNA is in fact missing .... meanwhile his body sits frozen in a tank somehwere .... oh and his head has also been severed because of complications, the freezing caused it to crack at least 10 times, and the head's also been shaved and had two holes drilled into it so the brain can be observed .... if you ask me, this is a tragic fate for a great sports hero, and the family should be ashamed of itself .... After that depressing note, here's something to check out, Conan O'Brien's 2000 commencement speech at Harvard University (link courtesy Jen) ... hilarious stuff! Monday, August 11, 2003
Congrats to Jen on making her first pillow from scratch!
Last night I hung out with my PSU buds Chris "Buzzsaw" Adamski and Dustin "Smokin D" Dopirak, we sampled the Pittsburgh nightlife and played some pool, it was fun as always ... I may have some other visitors on Thursday for the Pirates game, we'll see .... I met another celebrity (sort of) the other day .... there's this high school QB from Pittsburgh, Anthony Morelli, who is supposed to be one of the top three in the nation, there's a lot of hype surrounding him and they say he could be the next Dan Marino ... anyway he was in our office at the Trib for this photo shoot or something, so it was cool to see him after all I've been reading about him ... he's close to making a decision for college and my sources tell me he's already eliminated PSU, it's down to Pitt or Notre Dame, I'm keeping my fingers crossed he goes with the Irish, I mean is there really any choice? Jen left today :(
No, she didn't walk out on me ... she's done working so she went home to enjoy a week off before school starts ... she'll be back next weekend to help me move out, until then I'll be on my own for a week ... Jen said she's afraid she'll come back in a week to find me naked and starving huddled in the corner convulsing, I think I'll be ok though ... Anyway, it's time for another rant .... seems my boy Jeremy Shockey is in some hot water over comments he made to a magazine about Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells, he called the Big Tuna a "homo" .... ohhhhhhh man. Shockey says the quote was taken out of context and he was repeating what a friend said, he also stressed he wasn't trying to disrespect anyone or offend homosexuals ... and yet people seem to be in an uproar about the whole thing. For god's sake, he called him a homo, you know this word gets tossed around in every NFL lockerroom (and almost everywhere else, for that matter), and it doesn't even have its original conotation anymore, it's just a word used to insult people in general, not necessarily gays .... sure it's regrettable, but let's not make this out to be something it's not ... of course the lesbian and gay alliance are all over Shockey now for his gay-bashing, and he'll probably get booed more than ever this season ... but the way I see it, it's kind of refreshing to see an athlete who actually speaks his mind and has actual opinions .... by the way, he also criticized Parcells for his constant switching from coaching to broadcasting and whatnot, of course he's a great coach but the act was getting a little old. All I know is, I can't wait for Sept. 15 when the Giants and Cowboys meet on Monday Night Football, Shockey's comments about wanting to "make them pay" for passing him over in the draft (they were his favorite team growing up in Oklahoma) got me pumped up. By the way, I'll have my annual Giants season preview coming up soon, stay tuned. Also, if you want to delve a little deeper into the psyche of Jeremy Shockey, check out a big profile story they did on him in Sports Illustrated a few weeks ago, it was the issue with Kobe's ugly mug on the cover ... I want to send out very special Jay's World happy birthday wishto two of my cosmically connected friends, Mr. Mike "Nooch" Antenucci and Ms. Karen "Elk" Ehrhardt, who both celebrated their births yesterday. Happy bday guys, hope you had a good one ....
Also, a very special Jay's World boo to Mr. Chad Henne, the highly recruited high school quarterback from Pennsylvania who yesterday chose to attend Michigan (of all places) over Penn State .... Henne's parents are PSU alums, his sister is a PSU student, oh and he also goes to the high school of ex-PSU great Kerry Collins, he was the Nittany Lions' only quarterback recruit, yet he decided to become a Wolverine .... see you on the field Mr. Henne .... but it doesn't matter anyway, earlier this week PSU landed Dan Connor, who some have called the best high school linebacker in the nation, the rest of this year's recruiting class is also said to be top-notch ... of course it's all a crapshoot anyway, you never know how these kids will turn out (i.e. some other QB recruits who were supposed to be the "saviors" of PSU yet decided to go elsehwere - Chris Simms, Jeff Smoker, Ron Powlus, how many national championships have they won again?) This week's sign that America as we know it is doomed ... Gary Coleman has announced he'll be running for California governor. His opponents include Arnold Schwarzenegger and the comedian Gallagher. This is a true story. This is why the rest of the world hates America and thinks we are weak. I love Gary Coleman and all, Diff'rent Strokes is high quality television for the whole family to enjoy, but I don't want him making decisions that affect my day-to-day existence.
Case in point, here's what Gary had to say about his campaign: "I'm probably the least qualified for the job, but I'll have some great people around me." Crazy. Now if Mr. Drummond were running, different story, I'd vote for him in a heartbeat ....
So I had my first court appearance today, it went pretty well .... the media scrutiny was intense, it was like a circus in that small-town courtroom ... I just want to say that I'm innocent of all the charges, I'm no criminal, everyone who knows me will tell you that, and only god can judge me .....
But seriously though, all Kobe jokes aside, like the NBA superstar I did have to go to court today .... traffic court. Last week, I got three parking tickets (total: $84) in a span of two days .... I pled my case before the magistrate and got my sentence reduced to just $33, I bet Kobe wishes he could just pay 30 bucks and get off scot free, I have a feeling his punishment will probably be similar to mine anyway .... but check him out on TV today and see how things go for him. So I was doing some research on the internet the other day ... did you know that there are aliens living among us? According to this reputable site, political and world leaders like Dick Cheney, Al Gore, John Glenn, Tony Blair, and Pope John Paul II are all really martians ... there are also a bunch of aliens in the entertainment world, like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Elijah Wood, Eminem, Bjork, and Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi of Karate Kid fame) ... I also found it interesting to note that both Osama Bin Laden and Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones are "alien lizards now on our side (formerly on the other side) ... I don't know, this site seems pretty credible, it's got plenty of references ... and it really makes you think about the world we live in. As the site's author, John Nevada, reminds us:
"The list is obviously incomplete. Millions of others are a nonymous. Perhaps your brother-in-law, perhaps your classmate, perhaps your neighbor... Who knows ?" Who knows, indeed ..................... Anyway, in other news, the Major League Baseball trading deadline expired yesterday, and there were only a few major moves .... the Yankees made a few deals, getting third basemen Aaron Boone from the Cincinnati Reds' firesale in exchange for pitching prospect Brandon Claussen .... that made 3B Robin Ventura expendable, so they shipped him to Los Angeles for another pitcher and a prospect ... and they also picked up releiver Gabe White from the Reds .... overall I think they're solid moves, Boone is definitely an upgrade on the hot corner, Ventura's had a weak year offensively and he's getting older, sure Boone can't touch Ventura's defense (he's a definite gold-glove candidate in my opinion) but Boone should be with the Yanks for a while and gives them another productive bat in the lineup. I'm glad they picked up some pitching, the bullpen has been extremely shaky this year, and even with their recent pickups (Armando Benitez, senior citizen Jesse Orosco and White) it's still a big question mark heading down the stretch .... meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox are right behind them, and they've made even better additions to their pitching staff (Byung-Hun Kim, Scott Williamson and the Pirates' Scott Sauerbeck and Jeff Suppan) ... it should be an interesting end to the season, that's for sure ... see you in the playoffs. Here's another baseball note: The other day, Texas Rangers superstar Alex Rodriguez said he'd consider being traded to another team "if it was in the best interest of his team" ... basically he's upset Texas hasn't been a contender in the past three years since he signed a mega-deal worth an absurd $250 million over 10 years ... Said A-Rod: "If the Rangers found they could be better off without me, whether now or a year or two down the road, I'd be willing to sit down and talk ... When I signed here, I thought we'd make a hard turn toward improvement. Obviously, we're in a very tough division. I want what's best for (Rangers owner) Mr. (Tom) Hicks, if it were down to the Rangers improving or me being happy.'' Oh A-Rod, you are such a noble hero, wanting what's best for the team .... winning obviously means so much to you, that's why you signed with the cellar-dwelling Rangers for the biggest contract possible, rather than taking a few million less to play for a contender like the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox or your old team, the Mariners (remember them?) ... Rodriguez has backed off his comments, saying he'll stay for at least two more years .... note to A-Rod: You went for the cash and you've got seven years left on your deal, you made your bed, now lie in it. On a lighter note, Jen and I went to the Pirates game yesterday at PNC and saw them crumble against the last-place Padres , 10-7 ... there were all kinds of rumors about Pittsburgh's Brian Giles and Jason Kendall getting traded to San Diego, maybe even during the game, but it never happened .... it could still happen later on this season, though. For the sake of the fans here in Pittsburgh, I just hope they get something good in return, they've already shipped off a bunch of their best players (Suppan, Kenny Lofton, Mike Williams, Aramis Ramirez) and don't have much to show for it ... anyway, the stadium was cool as always, we got pretty good seats in the outfield bleachers for a reasonable price ($10 each) and had a fun time. One final note from the world of metal, former Judas Priest singer Tim "Ripper" Owens won't have to worry anymore about finding a new job now that original Priest singer Rob Halford is back with the band .... Ripper is currently working with Iced Earth on new material, he's replacing their old singer, Matt Barlow .... for more news and sound clips, visit www.icedearth.com .... |
