step into JAY'S WORLD...
Saturday, January 31, 2004
Well I know the Super Bowl is still like 6 weeks away, but I figure I'll give you my prediction now anyway.......

Just kidding. It seems that way though ..... enough of this two-week thing, it's too damn long. Anyway, back to my SUPER BOWL XXXVIII SYNOPSIS ...

.... as always, we here at Jay's World do not advocate gambling and will not be held responsible for losses incurred by those who bet according to Jay’s synopsis ... especially since my last two predictions were the Raiders and Rams .......

Anyway, I'm gonna keep this one fairly simple, since we've had two weeks of BS and all the self-appointed experts giving you their prognostications ...... yes, these are two great defenses and it should be a close game coming down to the end with only a few points separating them. Yes Bill Belichick is a mastermind coach who's had two weeks to prepare, plus he has some veterans who won a Super Bowl just two years ago. Yes the Panthers have a relatively inexperienced and non-flashy QB in Jake Delhomme who doesn't wow you with his athletic ability but also doesn't make many mistakes (not unlike the past few Super Bowl winning quarterbacks, including Mr. Tom Brady in 2001). I don't buy into this Patriots dominating the game thing, sure they're an awesome team that's been on a huge roll, but they're no longer in the chilly confines of Foxboro, nor are they facing a weak defense such as Indy's two weeks ago ...... Plus John Fox is a fine coach in his own right, and the Panthers have been something of a "team of destiny" this year (much like the Patriots in 2001), plus they've already beaten two seemingly better teams to get here, plus they don't seem to be trapped in the usual "we're just happy to be here" shell-shocked mentality of some Super Bowl underdogs. I expect Brady to play an exceptional game, but the Panthers talented defensive line will pressure him and force him to make one or two costly mistakes. I expect the running duo of my boys Stephen Davis and DeShaun Foster to grind out some tough yardage, thus opening up the passing game for the Panthers. I expect the Patriots to put extreme pressure on Jake Delhomme, and he may even get picked off once, but for the most part he will pass the test and find his talented receivers. I am expecting a close and entertaining game. Panthers (+6.5) are the pick.

Final Score: Panthers 24, Patriots 20
MVP: Steve Smith

Enjoy the game everyone.

In other news, read about the exploding whale. Just don't eat anything a few hours beforehand.

I'd like to recommend a book to you, it's called The DaVinci Code .... I got it for my dad for X-Mas in the hopes that I'd get to read it when he was done, and we both recently finished it .... it was pretty intriguing, the plot deals with a murder mystery and stuff but the real interesting part is all the background information about ancient historical secrets handed down from the time of Jesus Christ, most of which is based on true but little-known information, it's quite fascinating really as it discusses ancient secret societies and mysterious symbolism in famous works of art, among other topics ...... anyway it's a pretty good read so I suggest you check it out, I don't spend my time reading much but when I do it's usually something worth it, and this surely is. There's also a prequel out called Angels and Demons and I'm hoping to check that out in the near future ......

I'd also like to welcome the newest member of the blogger community by plugging Alan's new site, Al's Mind ..... always good to see a new blog, and I invite you to journey through his mind ...... in website form.

Don't forget, second episode of the new season of Chappelle's Show tonight at 10:30, don't miss it .............

SNOW DAY!!!!!!!!

Yeah that's right with all the inclement weather today, I was informed that I didn't have to come in to work tonight ..... which is a good thing because they're expecting like a foot of snow in Morris County and I probably would've had to stay over .... but here's the best part, this day off is in addition to my regularly scheduled days off, which just happen to be Wednesday and Thursday. So in other words ... three-day weekend! Not bad, not bad at all ......... to celebrate, I pretty much did nothing all day, nor do I plan on doing much the next few days, it should be glorious.

The one thing I did today was add to my cd collection, I burned or am in the process of burning the following:

Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black
Decapitated - The Negation
Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath
Death - Human
Obituary - The End Complete

I'm sure I'll come up with a few others before my weekend is over .....

Check out my girlfriend's new website ......
Hopefully she'll keep it updated .........
And hopefully she'll stop DYING HER HAIR WHACK COLORS ...... crazy kid.

Let's spend a few minutes on that huge disgrace inhabiting Madison Square Garden, aka the New York Rangers ....
Here's a squad that hasn't made the playoffs for SEVEN YEARS despite having one of, if not the, highest salaries in the NHL as well as residing in the most high profile city in the league .... they've probably got more 1990s-era All-Stars than any other franchise .... just about every single player on their roster does not play up to his potential ... they're currently 6 points out of a playoff spot ... they're extremely lacking at the defensive position with several starters out long-term ... plus they've been very underwhelming at the goaltender spot ... and what do they do yesterday? Make a trade for Jaromir Jagr. Does he play defense? No. Is he a goalie? No. Is he an aging superstar on the decline who makes an exorbitant amount of money, not to mention an unhappy crybaby who forced trades out of his last two cities? Certainly. He'll fit in perfectly. Granted, Jagr is extremely talented .... but so were Alexei Kovalev, Anson Carter, Peter Nedved, Eric Lindros, not to mention Pavel Bure and Theo Fleury ..... notice I say WERE, because all of those players became shells of their former selves when putting on the blue shirt, so why should Jagr be any different? Now I can't fault them that much for making the move, they didn't have to pick up all of his salary, and he does seem to have a lot of his offensive skills left (lord knows they can use them) but if this is the ONLY move they make, then I say to hell with the Rangers, because all their Cablevision tycoon of an owner, Jim Dolan, cares about then is filling the seats and perhaps trying to squeeze into the playoffs as the eight seed only to get embarrassed in the first round. I have a feeling he thinks this move will pay off the way another move he recently made with his other team, the Knicks, did, namely trading for a franchise player in Stephon Marbury. Hockey is a totally different sport than basketball and it requires a strong team effort, and unless your name is Gretzky or Lemieux and you're in your prime, you can't single-handedly make a team great over the long-term. To do that, you need a strong defensive core of young, hungry players, solid goaltending, strong veteran leadership, and a solid team system that everyone believes in and his held accountable to by a tough motivating coach. The Rangers have pretty much none of that, and that's what makes them a disgrace. The hockey gods repayed them for signing Jagr in the form of a 9-1 ass-whooping by the Ottawa Senators in Jagr's debut tonight, their worst defeat in over a decade. Hopefully this will give them a strong clear message of the impending doom that is to come if they don't shape up, otherwise the Ranger faithful will be sure to do just that at the next home game.

The end.

I saw that Ashton Kutcher movie The Butterfly Effect the other night with my buds Al and Mike and some peeps ..... it wasn't bad, better than I expected I guess, certainly more disturbing than I expected, in fact it was pretty messed up. It wasn't Punk'd, that's for sure .....

Monday, January 19, 2004
First off I wanna say thanks to Jen for making my short visit up to PSU very enjoyable, we didn't do much and it was cold as balls outside, but it was fun nonetheless .....

And secondly I wanna say P-A-N-T-H-E-R-S, Panthers!!!!!!

The Eagles have fallen short once again in the NFC Championship, it's too bad really, they may never get that precious and long-elusive Super Bowl ring, things are certainly looking gloomy indeed in the City of Brotherly Love after this debacle .... but credit Carolina though, they played a better game and had the superior talent. As I predicted, the Panthers' D-line did push Donovan McNabb around, I don't have all the stats but I believe he was sacked like four times, pressured several other times, threw three interceptions, plus he was even injured and knocked out of the game on what may or may not have been a late hit ..... I'm sure the Iggles fans will point to this as the reason they lost, but McNabb was hardly effective when he was in there during the first half before Koy "the Toy" Detmer took over .... the running tandem of Stephen Davis (76 yards) and DeShaun Foster (60) was fine, and QB Jake Delhomme was solid if not impressive (9-for-14, 110 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT) in generating some offense ....... and not to mention the Panthers (+5) were another big win for me ...... let's see how I fared in the other game ....

I was pretty close on the final score (mine: Pats 24, Colts 18; the final: Pats 24, Colts 14) as New England stormed into the Super Bowl as I predicted .... the Pats defense was superb, picking off Peyton Manning four times, recovering a fumble, and limiting the game's best receiver, Marvin Harrison, to just three catches for 19 yards and no TDs ... punting wasn't a huge factor, but like I said, the first time Indy attempted one after that long layoff there was a bad snap that led to a safety .... let's just forget that Daniel Graham catching the game-winning TD thing, I don't know what I was smoking really (unless it was a premonition of the Super Bowl? hmmmmmm....) ....

Anyway, the Pats (-3.5) were yet another win, giving me a 2-0 weekend and boosting my playoff totals to an impressive 7-3 against the spread and an even more impressive 9-1 picking straight winners. This could be my best playoff performance in the past decade, here's hoping for a tremendous Super Bowl Synopsis, stay tuned!

Saturday, January 17, 2004
OK it's the last big weekend of football before the "Big Game", essentially it's the final weekend for us real football fans before all the nonsense and hype starts up ....... anyway, that means it's time for my NFL Playoff Picks:

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP
PATRIOTS (-3.5) over Colts

Well it looks like Bill Belichick's boys will be heading back to the Super Bowl once again .... sure, Peyton Manning has been on an incredible hot streak, and he's gotten some huge monkeys off his back, namely winning a playoff game at home, then winning another on the road, both pretty easily .... but honestly, do you think this team is going to win in the chilly confines of Foxboro, Mass. ? You realize they can't play defense, right? And this time of year defense is the most important thing ... the Patriots certainly understand that, they play defense just about as well as anybody. They've had plenty of time for Belichick to devise a scheme to at least hold the mighty Colts offense in check, if not shut it down completely ..... and as for that streak of two straight games withIndy not having to punt? That's gonna end this weekend, too. In fact it could be a big factor, with their punter having had several weeks off, then watch him botch a crucial punt late in the game. Oh and I had the game-deciding play come to me in a vision the other night, for some reason I see Pats tight end Daniel Graham scoring the game-winning TD in the fourth quarter, after a lateral no less, so mark that one down, folks .....
Patriots 24, Colts 18

NFC CHAMPIONSHIP
Panthers (+5) over EAGLES

I can't wait for this game ... why? Because for the third straight year I'll get to see the hopes and dreams of Philadelphia football fans come crashing down in a blaze of glory ...... Yes, the Eagles will fall in their third straight NFC Championship game, this time to the underdog Panthers. Sure the Eagles beat the Packers last week .... Green Bay was less talented, not to mention outcoached, and Brett Favre was probably on drugs (did you see his interception in OT? Awful doesn't begin to describe it.) .... but this week the fiesty Carolina team that refuses to die comes into "The Linc" and smacks around Donovan McNabb (they have perhaps the best D-Line in the NFL, plus John Fox is a fine defensive-minded coach) .... Will Stephen Davis play? It doesn't really matter, DeShaun Foster will be just fine as a sub, plus Jake Delhomme will be on his game in leading crazy Carolina to the Super Bowl ..........
Panthers 28, Eagles 25

So I'm 5-3 thus far in the playoffs, not too bad, but hopefully it'll pick up after this week. I've also come a long way from my preseason prediction of the Dolphins and Giants in the Super Bowl way back in August (man, what was I thinking????), but you know how tricky those can be .... anyway, GO PANTHERS .....

Thursday, January 15, 2004
Here's some breaking news for you concerning the race for the Democratic nomination ....

Former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun -- trailing badly in the polls -- will drop out of the Democratic race for president and will endorse front-runner Howard Dean, Democratic sources tell CNN.

In another news flash, Former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun was running for the Democratic nomination, sources tell Jay's World ....

And in other news, apparently there's an election of some sort coming up ...... stay tuned for more info as it comes available.

Well I'm going up to PSU tomorrow to visit Jen, hopefully that is, as long as this snow we're currently getting dies down, but I don't think it should be too much of a problem ... I'll get there somehow, even if it means strapping snow shoes to my feet .....

Monday, January 12, 2004
Well another round of the playoffs are over, and with my predictions I reached the highest highs and the lowest lows, let's take a look...

First game was a nice win, I had the underdog Panthers (+7.5) and they didn't let me down, try as they might ... my boy Mike Martz helped me out with that one though, with more head-scratching coaching moves, namely opting to run out most of the clock at the end of regulation and try for a game-tying field goal, rather than take a shot at the endzone since he was inside the Panthers' 20, their defense was already reeling, plus the Rams possess some of the most skilled offensive players the modern era has ever seen ... I think I could've gotten the Rams to the NFC Championship at least for crying out loud .... but anyway, the Carolina defense did keep the game close and eventually won 29-23 in 2OT ... I'm 1-0.

Game two has to be one of my greatest predictions, not only are the Titans (+6) a win with the points, I also had the final score correct with the Pats winning 17-14, PLUS Adam Vinatieri DID kick a late FG with under five minutes remaining to seal the win, as I said he would ... now, if I had placed money on this bet, I'd consider it perhaps my all-time greatest pick, but still it's one for the ages nonetheless. ... 2-0 baby.

Game three ... didn't go so well. I was pretty close on the score (Indy won 38-31; I had KC winning 38-30) .... the Chiefs (-3) really let me down, Priest (176 yards rushing, 2 TDs) did outrun Edge (125 yards, 2 TDs) by a slim margin like I said, but he also had a key fumble ... but the real story here, friends, was the Chiefs' defense, or lack thereof .... I mean the Colts have a great offense and Manning was on fire, but could you stop them at least ONCE???? Indy scored on every offensive possession except the last one in the game, when they gave the Chiefs the ball back with only 4 seconds left ... the KC D was atrocious to say the least, I'm tellin you they had every opportunity to stop Indy, then if they score on their next possession (the Colts defense was almost as bad) they tie it up and ignite the home crowd, and away they go to the championship .... the one time they make a stop on fourth down it gets negated by a dumb penalty .... somebody get this team some defensive players FAST, otherwise they're wasting a great offense and they're going nowhere fast. I fall to 2-1.

Finally, I picked the right winner in the final game, unfortunately though the Eagles (-4.5) didn't cover thanks to their 20-17 OT victory ... also unfortunately, the Eagles won, period. I knew that Brett Favre's "miracle" run was going to end, I just didn't think he'd throw an absolutely dreadful looking duck of a pass while trying to stage a comeback in overtime, nor did I think their genius coach Mike Sherman would opt to punt on a fourth and short late in the game in Eagles territory with his team ahead by a FG and the outstanding Ahman Green in his backfield rather than go for it and try to seal the win, especially after successfully going on it on fourth and short two times the previous week, as well as another time earlier in the very same game, but oh well, such is playoff football ... if you coach scared you're bound to lose, just ask the aforementioned Mike Martz or better yet Jim Fassel in recent history ..... and I'm 2-2.

Well that brings my playoff record to a humble 5-3 after a hot start .... I should get bonus points for that Patriots game but oh well ... and I have to live with another week of Eagles hype, can't wait .... anyway stay tuned for my AFC and NFC Championship picks next weekend, and I'm out.

Friday, January 09, 2004
OK it's time to look at the second round of the NFL playoffs this weekend...

Carolina (+7.5) over RAMS
Panthers seem to be somewhat of a darkhorse to go to the Super Bowl, I'm not sure if I'm ready to make that claim, but I will take them to win on the road this week at St. Louis .... I just think their defense will keep them in the game against the Rams' high-powered offense, and they do have offensive playmakers of their own that can help them keep up. Marc Bulger concerns me as he leads the Rams for the first time in the playoffs, and if the Carolina D can rattle him and force him to make some mistakes, they could win in an upset.
Panthers 30, Rams 28

Titans (+6) over PATRIOTS
This one has to be the marquee matchup of the weekend, not in terms of superstars but in the sense that it should be a grueling physical matchup in the bad weather of Foxboro (should be below zero when the game kicks off after 8 p.m.) ... Titans are incredibly banged-up, and I think it will be more of the same, although with Steve McNair at the helm they'll keep it close ... just not close enough. Pats win with a late Adam Vinateiri field goal.
Patriots 17, Titans 14

CHIEFS (-3) over Colts
Expect a high-scoring affair in this one, weather shouldn't be a factor, Chiefs can't play much defense but their offense will certainly be able to keep up with Indy's ... Peyton Manning finally got over the hump last week with his first playoff victory, but he'll have to wait for his second. Priest Holmes will outrun Edgerrin James in a matchup of top RBs as the Chiefs storm into the AFC Championship.
Chiefs 38, Colts 30

EAGLES (-4.5) over Packers
I hate to admit it but I think the Birds will beat Green Bay this week at home, I can't see Brett Favre making another "miracle" comeback win against this defense at the Linc, plus the Packers can't play much defense anyway .... It will be a tough one for the Eagles no doubt, and they are banged-up with Brian Westbrook and Carlos Emmons out, plus Troy Vincent a game-time decision ... I'll be pulling hard for a Packers win to disappoint the Philly fans once again, but I can't pick it in good conscience, not this week anyway.
Eagles 23, Packers 14

Thursday, January 08, 2004
First off I'd like to thank Jen for a great three weeks or so, it was good to have her around for a change, unfortunately she went back to PSU today but I'm sure ill be seeing her soon .......

My pal Lindsay is interning at the Daily Record this week, so it's been pretty cool to have her around the office, hopefully they'll hook her up with some full-time employment there after she graduates, that would be dope ... I'll have to put in a good word with her (since I have so much pull there, and all) ....

Also today the Giants ushered in the Tom Coughlin era, hiring him as their new head coach ... I'm pretty happy with the move, he's a solid coach and proven it already at the NFL level, unlike pretty much all the other candidates out there (with the exception of Jim Fassel of course, and Joe Gibbs, where did that one come from by the way??) ... anyway he's pretty much a general/dictator type, in case you couldn't tell from his press conference, he's all about "restoring the pride of these young men" and whatnot, plus he doesn't allow facial hair or sunglasses, he and Shockey should get along real well ... but I have a feeling we'll see a pretty quick turnaround with the talent on the team, let's face it he's already done it in Jacksonville starting from scratch and going to not one but two AFC Championships with an expansion team, now he's got a proven, veteran team which was 5 months ago considered a Super Bowl contender .... certainly they've got some offseason moves yet to make, including shoring up the offensive and defensive lines, as I've said for a while my picks for their first draftee (No. 4 overall) would be either Iowa offensive lineman Robert Gallery or Miami safety Sean Taylor, I don't think they need to go the way of a QB in the first round, even though there is outstanding talent, and anyway I figure both Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger will be gone by the time the G-Men pick ... and honestly if you look at the recent Super Bowl winners, they've been led by solid, unflashy quarterbacks who weren't very highly regarded (Brad Johnson, Tom Brady, Trent Dilfer, etc etc) and just flat-out didn't make mistakes and made good football decisions .... I think Kerry Collins can certainly fit that mode with the right system and offensive talent around him and with enough protection from the line ... There's work to be done on defense, first I'd like to see them get ex-Bears coach Dick Jauron as defensive coordinator (he held the post under Coughlin in Jacksonville), then with a playmaker on D like Sean Taylor or someone via free agency, added to a healthy Will Allen and Will Peterson in the secondary, it could be pretty formidable ... Michael Strahan is still a fine player, I'd like to see Kenny Holmes play up to his potential on the other defensive end spot, as well as last year's draftee, William Joseph, at tackle .... at linebacker both Dhani Jones and Brandon Short are free agents, I'd like to see them keep at least one, preferably Short, and in a best-case scenario sign All-Pro free agent Julian Peterson from the 49ers as another outside backer .... I'll tell you what, with those aforementioned moves I could have this team playing in the Big Game next season, GM Ernie Accorsi better take heed, I could have his job before he knows it ....

Anyway those are my Giants offseason notes for the time being .... coming soon, my NFL picks for the second round of the playoffs, stay tuned .......

Monday, January 05, 2004
Let's take a look at my NFL picks from the weekend, shall we ... I went 3-1, not a bad start .... the Packers did me in, I knew they'd win but I figured it wouldn't be close and certainly not an OT game ... Tim Hasselbeck really stepped it up to keep this one close, unfortunately his only mistake came at the worst conceivable time, throwing an INT in OT to cost the Seahawks the game ....

The Titans were winners for me, and it turned out to be a better game than I figured ... I also expected Steve McNair's numbers (14-for-23, 159 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTs) to be Anthony Wright's numbers (20-for-37, 214 yards, 2 TDs 1 INT) and vice versa. Wright was impressive, although the mighty Jamal Lewis (35 yards) was not against a very powerful Tennessee run defense. But like I said, it wasn't McNair's numbers, but his guts (along with the guts of Eddie George) that won this game for the Titans and set up an awesome Tennessee-New England game next week.

I was right on in my predictions for the Panthers as well, although that was more of a blowout scorewise ... the Cowboys' inexperience and weak offense were both exposed, and I was right about the Carolina WRs busting some big plays (Steve Smith - 5 catches, 135 yards, 1 TD; Mushin Muhammad - 4 catches, 103 yards).

Colts also gave me a W, and it was a shootout, albeit a one-sided shootout ... Denver didn't even bother to show up for the game, I think they thought they were still resting up and the playoffs started next week .... and what were they thinking on defense, at one point not even bothering to touch Marvin Harrison after he fell to the ground making a catch, then proceeded to get up and practically walk into the endzone .... congrats to Peyton Manning for getting his first playoff win. I'm gonna have to ask my pal Ed, a notorious Denver fan, if the Broncos are still home waiting for the Colts game to start.

Also congrats to LSU for giving Oklahoma yet another loss and winning their share of the national title ... I've only gotten to see the Sooners play twice this year, their loss to Kansas State and now this loss in the Sugar Bowl (coincidentally both came after some Oklahoma players began to make a case for them being the greatest team in college history, hah, oops), and unfortunately they didn't look so great either time, in fact they even seemed a lot like Penn State tonight, although they were playing an excellent LSU team .... wouldn't it be nice to see LSU vs. USC next weekend for an outright national title? Oh well, the college presidents can't figure out a way to make several hundred million dollars out of it so I guess it won't happen ....... not this year, at least.

In other news, I finally got to play a street hockey game over the weekend and it was awesome, special thanks to my pals Steve and Mike as well as the fellas we played with .... it felt good to be back on the pavement again and lace up the old blades, to top it off my team won and I registered two assists, including one on the game-winner, plus Jen came by and got some great action shots and digital movie clips .... we capped the day off with a few rounds of bowling with Al-Dawg and a late-night trip to the legendary Golden Dawn, good stuff ....

Friday, January 02, 2004
Welcome to my first post of 2004 ......

2003 was a tremendous year, let's work together to make '04 even better ........

I spent my new year's eve working at the Daily Record (or Daily Planet as Jen's mom likes to call it) .... It was just me and a 50-year-old guy in the sports section, but luckily my pals Jen and Al rescued me and came to visit, we watched the ball drop together then drove around trying to find eating establishments that were opened, we finally settled on a kickin' new year's party at good ol Dunkin Donuts, they never disappoint ......
Luckily I had today off as well as tomorrow, so I assure you they won't go to waste ....... today was spent with friends, family, food and football, always a good combination ..... tomorrow should be more of the same, and will also include a hockey game (finally) and some NFL playoffs, can't wait ...

Speaking of NFL playoffs, I figured I'd resurrect ***Jay's NFL Playoff Picks*** so here goes ..... as always, Jay's World does not advocate gambling and will not be held responsible for losses incurred by those who bet according to my predictions.....

Titans (+3.5) over RAVENS
By some cruel twist of fate (actually, by the crappiness of the AFC North), the Ravens (10-6) are hosting the Titans (12-4) in the first round .... Baltimore does of course have the NFL's best offensive and defensive players in the Lewises (Jamal and Ray), plus the Ravens have beaten Tennessee in the past five matchups .... however, I think it's about time that the Titans exorcise their demons and finally beat this team, Steve McNair will be on top of his game (yes he's banged up, but trust me, he'll be fine) and I'd certainly take a McNair-led team over a team lead by Anthony Wright at this time of year.
Titans 27, Ravens 14

PACKERS (-7) over Seahawks
This one's a no-brainer. Seattle can't win on the road, especially not in arguably the league's greatest homefield advantage, the frozen tundra of Lambeu Field. Golden Boy Brett Favre is the hot topic of the talking heads since his dad died a few weeks ago and all (no other players in the history of American sport have lost a loved one during the season), and of course God cares about the results of football games. The Pack should roll in this one. That doesn't mean they can't be beaten though .... you'll just have to wait until next week, though.
Packers 38, Seahawks 21

PANTHERS (-3) over Cowboys
I could see the Parcells-led 'Boys being a favorite pick here, their defense is good, no doubt, but the offense .... sorry, not buying it. I know Dallas already beat them the first time around, but watch up-and-coming John Fox to outsmart Parcells' young team this time around ... Dallas will probably shut down my boy Stephen Davis again as they did in the regular season, but watch QB Jake Delhomme get the ball to WRs Steve Smith and Mushin Muhammad for some big plays. Still, it should be a close one .... but Carolina's been winning close ones all year. Overachieving Dallas will be put to sleep.
Panthers 17, Cowboys 10

COLTS (-2.5) over Broncos
Broncos have been a hot team of late (excluding the season finale, when they played third-stringers) and of course they totally whipped Indy just a few weeks ago in their dome no less ... I just don't think Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy will let that happen again. I'm expecting a shoot-out, with Denver's Clinton Portis running wild, but the Colts have too much offensive firepower, and after their embarrassing playoff exit against the Jets last year they will do whatever it takes to advance this time. After witnessing their amazing comeback against Tampa Bay on that Monday night game, I'm ready to give Peyton the benefit of the doubt. He'll finally step up in the big game.
Colts 41, Broncos 30
