Some random news, notes and thoughts from our trip to Baltimore:
We stayed at the Hyatt Regency, it was pretty fly ... our suite overlooked the harbor, and we had free champagne and chocolate covered strawberries, it wasn't cheap but it was worth it ... there were those cicada bugs all over the place, mostly just crawling on the ground and being stepped on ... we went to the Yankees-Orioles game, the crowd had to be half Yanks fans, which was cool ... we had pretty good seats in the outfield, but since the Yanks won in a rout (18-5) we were able to move down behind the Os dugout by the 8th inning ... Alex Rodriguez hit a home run, that was cool, and later in an elevator we happened met the guy who caught the homer ... we went to the Babe Ruth birthplace/museum, it was pretty interesting, they are planning on expanding into a new site that would feature all Baltimore sports as well ... there were a few ominous clouds but for the most part the weather was beautiful ... for photos of the trip, be sure to check out Jen and Jay's fotologs in the coming days. As you may know the historic Golden Dawn Diner in Hamilton is officially "Golden Dawn III", so last night Al, Jen and I ventured out to find either GD I or II. I had actually seen another "Golden Dawn" once down in south Jersey a few years ago and so we headed there hoping it was a part of the trilogy .... turns out it was actually "New Golden Dawn", we asked our young waiter about it but he wasn't much help, he did tell us there was another "New Golden Dawn" in Cherry Hill, but that was all the information we could get. Perhaps someday we'll get to the bottom of this mystery. Wednesday, May 26, 2004
I just wrapped up Day 8 of nine straight days at work, it's getting annoying but I just have to get through tomorrow and it'll all be worth it ..... on Thursday Jen and I are headed to Baltimore for a little getaway. Be sure to check out the Orioles-Yankees game Thursday night if you get the YES Network and look for us somewhere in right field ...
Congrats to Kerry Collins on signing with the Oakland Raiders .... supposedly he'll be the backup, until Rich Gannon either gets cut or placed in a nursing home, so it's a good situation for him. And the best part about it is his blindside will be protected by Raiders rookie Robert Gallery, just like he would have been with the Giants if they followed my plan. Man I hope Kerry is an All-Pro next year. Now this is just scary, Spanky the Clown arrested on child porn charges .... who would have guessed it, with a name like Spanky? Now I understand why some people are so afraid of clowns .... Finally, here's some good news, apparently the Crips and Bloods in Newark are calling a truce. That's right, they're turning in all their blue and red clothing and exchaning their 9s for flowers and lollipops. I'll believe it when I see it, but if true, anything is possible. Next they'll tell me the East Coast-West Coast rap fued has been declared over. Thursday, May 20, 2004
I just heard the news that the mighty Black Sabbath is now headlining Ozzfest 2004 .... excellent news! I can't wait to see them live again, Al and I got our tickets a while back. The only catch is that original drummer Bill Ward couldn't reach an agreement on their proposal or something, so he'll be replaced by Ozzy drummer Mike Bordin. That's unfortunate, I'd like to see the original lineup intact, but it'll still do the trick. Of course this means Ozzy likely won't be the headliner as originally planned, so neither Al or I will get to see the old man solo with Zakk Wylde on guitar, but still, I'll take it. Sabbath!!!!! Had an enjoyable weekend for the most part, Jen and I spent most of it at the world-renowned Jersey Shore ... we stayed in a cabin one night at the delightful Scrubbie Pines Campground, and also visited her grandparents. We also attempted to go crabbing (but caught nothing) and went to the beach (but left after huddling under a blanket for 10 minutes). But it was fun to say the least. Now we both get to spend nine consecutive days working before our next trip, Baltimore.
The Springfield Atoms are still in first place in my fantasy baseball league, although I did relinquish the top spot for just a few days. I was feeling pretty good after acquiring ace Jason Schmidt last week from the Hatchetmen in a blockbuster trade (he pitched a one-hitter with 13 Ks tonight), but also received devastating news that slugger Troy Glaus could be out for the rest of the season. It's alright though, I have a backup plan. Top secret, of course. Jackass of the Week award goes to NBA superstar Kevin Garnett (who normally seems like a good guy) for his comments on the upcoming Game 7 in an intense playoff series between Minnesota and Sacramento: "This is it. It's for all the marbles. I'm sitting in the house loading up the pump, I'm loading up the Uzis, I've got a couple of M-16s, couple of nines, couple of joints with some silencers on them, couple of grenades, got a missile launcher. I'm ready for war." Obviously, it was a stupid thing to say, and he did apologize. And granted, today's athletes, professional or otherwise, have been ingrained with the notion that sports are "war" their whole lives. But it was just really foolish to go that far given the current global situation, as well as the recent death of Pat Tillman and the discussions of true heroes vs. sports heroes. But I thought everything was supposed to change after 9/11 regarding this kind of stuff in sports, as well as a whole lot more. Apparently, once again, that isn't the case. Sunday, May 09, 2004
Well it's officially summer, Jen is finally home, for a little while at least, so let the fun times begin ......
I was up at PSU this weekend to help Jen move out. After several hours of heavy lifting and a few car trips, we finally got it done. I also got to spend a little time with some of my old Collegian homies, which was fun as always. I'd like to say congratulations and good luck to the Class of 2004 at Penn State and everywhere around the globe .... I'd also like to wish all the moms out there a very Happy Mother's Day, especially my mom, even though she can't even turn a computer on. |
