step into JAY'S WORLD...

It's been a pretty fun Major League Baseball season so far, I've been following it pretty closely thanks to my job as well as my involvement in a fantasy baseball league this year (Springfield Atoms are STILL in first place, by the way) ...... anyway, the all-star break is almost here, so I've prepared a Jay's World All-Star Team. Why? Well, because I'm a loser, but you knew that already. Plus, I wanted to pick the guys I thought deserved it based on their play this season, and not just mindless favortism. Anyway, I tried to play by their rules, 32 to a team, and one player from every major league club. I have a bunch of first basemen on both teams, but they're deserving. I tried to be as unbiased as possible too. Here's the list, let me know what you think:

Saw that Michael Moore film, Fahrenheit 9/11, tonight with my dad, just a few comments ...

First of all, no it's not a totally balanced film, just like any other movie it's one person's (or group of people's) viewpoint, and you have to go into it understanding that it was created by a person who's strongly anti-Bush, anti-Republican, anti-war, etc. Moore has an agenda, which is essentially to get George Bush out of the White House at all costs. As long as you keep that in mind and take it for what it's worth, you'll be fine.

That being said, it's got a pretty powerful message, one that you don't often hear if you rely on cable news or, worse yet, the messages that come straight from the Bush camp about the war in Iraq , 9/11 and the "War on Terror." It's definitely something that open-minded people should check out. The images and ideas in it range from funny to overly dramatic to eye-opening to downright disturbing. Hopefully, at least a few people who see it will come away at least questioning the various information that's out there coming from both extremes (this movie on one hand, Fox News on the other) and bring about some meaningful discussion about the events of our day. Instead of just more polarization of "Democrats vs. Republicans" and "Liberals vs. Conservatives" and people blindly aligning themselves with one particular extreme or the other without question, the millions of moderate/reasonable people who aren't very politically active or aware will see this, pay a little more attention to the news, and begin to think for themselves as we approach a very important election. Crazy thought, I know, but these are crazy times ...

If you've seen it, feel free to discuss ..... If you haven't, you should.

Some news since the last post ...

Jen's gone back to school already for the second summer session at Penn State ... it was a real quick summer, but we had some fun at least. I miss her a lot, but I'll be seein her real soon. Senior year already too, it goes a lot faster than you think ....

In other news, I bought a new car, 2004 Mitsubishi Galant (color: Titanium) ... bit the bullet, traded in the Cavalier ... I think I made a good choice. I'm lovin it, McDonalds style.

Went to NYC the other day with my pals Ed and Mike, had some laughs, took the subway for the first time, tried unsuccessfully to get on Letterman, almost saw Nicole Richie (you know, from that Paris Hilton shit), but didn't feel like waiting around for the skank ... good times were had by all.

Finally, good luck to Al-Dawg on his test to become a certified personal trainer, I'm sure he'll succeed since he practiced on me, and after one session I'm already the perfect physical specimen.

I swear I posted a couple days ago, and now it seems to be missing .....

Anyway, I'm back from vacation in beautiful Orlando, hopefully Jen enjoyed her first trip to Disney World, I know I had fun ... weather was great, we didn't get to meet Mickey but Jen did get her picture taken with some fools from the Jungle Book ... now I'm back to the grind of work, we've been busy the past few days with our Spring All-Area high school sports section and whatnot, but after this week my job should get a whole lot easier for the next few months (as if it was rocket science to begin with) ....

The other day I picked up the new Beastie Boys cd To the 5 Boroughs for only 10 dollars at Best Buy, I'm loving it so far ... a return to straight-up, old-school hip-hop (most hyphenated phrase ever), you should definitely give it a listen. Maybe I'll come correct with a proper review in the next few days if the mood strikes me.

So it's official, the Giants today announced the signing of much-maligned quarterback Kurt Warner. He's a former Arena League QB who came out of nowhere to become a league MVP and lead the Rams to a Super Bowl title, but recently he's hit hard times, getting concussions as well as a hand injury, ultimately losing his job to backup Marc Bulger ... he's been criticized for everything, from letting his wife complain on sports talk radio shows about his treatment by the team to refusing to go into a game when the coach asked him if he wanted to replace Bulger ... so basically he's got a lot to prove. But, consider the situation the Giants are currently in. First-round pick Eli Manning may not be ready, and the other options are scary: you've got reality TV superstar Jesse "The Bachelor" Palmer sitting pretty on the bench, plus tubby rookie Jared Lorenzen of Kentucky, plus some kid playing in NFL Europe right now. Picking up Warner is the smart move, given that some of the other possible free agents out there included Kordell Stewart, Tim Couch, and possibly Rich Gannon. It makes you wonder though, if Warner plays well, when will the Eli Era begin? It's a strange time right now for Giants football ... but hopefully in the next few days they'll pick up a linebacker (Jeremiah Trotter?) and then they should be set, for now at least. We'll see .....

Alright enough about that. So I went to a wedding last week with Jen and my family, it was for my second cousin Mike .... It was the first real wedding ceremony I had been to, hardly knew anyone there ... but it was an open bar, so you know it wasn't that bad. In fact, it was pretty swell. A good time was had by all. And I do mean good.

Today I had to go to a two-hour involuntary training session at work on "critical thinking," as if I don't already think critically, or even think at all. What a waste of time. The only redeeming thing about it is that I get paid overtime, but to be honest, I'd rather be sitting at home, thinking critically about working somewhere else. Just kidding.

Just to follow up on an earlier post: Bill Ward has reconsidered holding out, and it will now be the complete original Black Sabbath lineup headlining Ozzfest 2004. Dope!

So, that carbonated sugar beverage you drink, is it "soda", or is it "pop"? It's a question that's plagued mankind for centuries ... well maybe not, but it's bothered me ever since I started going to school out in the wilderness of central PA and then worked in Pittsburgh, it was there that I discovered people who have the audacity to order a "pop" with their hot dogs and so on. Well it turns out, they aren't the only ones .... check out this site if you're interested, it offers an unscientific study that maps out regions of the country where "soda" and "pop" are used. There are even some places that go as far as calling all their fizzy drinks "coke", regardless of brand or flavor. I've heard rumors about this before .... "Give me a coke," they'll say to the waitress, and then when she asks what kind, you reply "Mountain Dew" or "Sprite" or "Fresca" and so on. Ridiculous stuff. Anyway, take a gander at that site, it could be a real eye opener.

Well that's it for now, my vacation starts in T-minus 27 hours ... that's right, a week in sunny Orlando and the greatest place on earth, Disney World. I'll catch you later.
