So the Democratic National Convention is going on this week, maybe you've caught a little of it on cable TV or in the news. Basically they're just rallying the troops and trying to get everyone fired up, not really too newsworthy, but it is interesting to hear them outline John Kerry's campaign. Kerry himself will speak tonight, so if you get a chance check it out, then in a couple weeks take a look at the Republican National Convention in NYC .... If you'd like more info about where the candidates stand on various issues, take a look at this, for starters ... who knows, maybe if enough people get interested we'll actually have more than half the country vote for its president for a change ... crazier things have happened ....
The other day I finally saw Spider-Man 2 with my pops ... it wasn't too bad, a little mushy, but I guess actually having a story with real characters is better than just being mindless garbage ... The effects were quite good, especially the fight scenes between Spidey and Doctor Octopus ... Now what I'm really looking forward to is Star Wars Episode III in May 2005 .... they announced the title, Revenge of the Sith, just so nerds like me could get all excited. And trust me, we are ... very excited ... Monday, July 26, 2004
Congratulations to Lance Armstrong on winning his sixth consecutive Tour de France on Sunday as expected. This is a definitely a great sporting accomplishment, and I for one find it truly inspiring.
So did George W. Bush, who called Lance on the phone to congratulate him. What words of wisdom did the president have to say? "You're awesome." My pal Rick and I had a good laugh over this at work tonight, we could just see hear him (or better yet, Will Ferrell on SNL) saying, "You're awesome .... let's have a beer sometime." I can only imagine what John Kerry might have said .... "That was a magnificent display of physical prowess, Mr. Armstrong. I'd like to purchase you to an alcoholic beverage at your nearest convenience." Congratulations also to my buddy Dustin (aka D$, aka Smokin D) for getting a reporting job in Virginia covering James Madison University basketball. They have no idea what they're getting into. But seriously, I'm sure he'll do a great job as usual, so best of luck. Saturday, July 24, 2004
Hopefully you've at least been following the Tour de France this year ..... American Lance Armstrong is on the verge of winning his sixth straight Tour, unprecedented in its long history. This is an amazing feat, given the grueling physical punishment he's undergone for the past 20 days or so. You can shrug it off and say it's just a bike, but these are some of the best athletes in the world, not only because of the physical strain, but also the mental strain as well. He's had to deal with accusations that he's taking performance-enhancing drugs (which he vigorously denies). He's also had French media types staking out his hotel and going through his trash to try to dig up evidence of doping, and to top it off, he's doing all this on foreign soil, where just the other day some people spit on him during the race because he's an American. Combine that with the fact that Lance overcame an advanced stage of cancer that had spread to his brain just a few years ago, and you'll see this may be the greatest sporting accomplishment of our generation.
The Tour finishes up Sunday afternoon, you can finally catch some major network television coverage on CBS at 2 p.m., I urge you to check it out. Did anyone catch the Yankees-Red Sox game last night, Boston ace Curt Schilling was crying in the dugout after the Yanks shelled him to win 8-7 and take a 9.5-game division lead. I guess he finally realized maybe he should have thought about putting on the Pinstripes instead of signing with a loser franchise like Boston. Wednesday, July 21, 2004
Well hopefully Jen had a good 21st birthday weekend ..... we spent a night at the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, man it was pretty phat, a real first-class operation they got goin there ... it's pretty luxurious. Luckily my parents are gambling addicts (just kidding) and were able to get a comp room, they also went down with us as well as Jen's parents ... none of us were very lucky on the slots, but we still had a good time. After we got back we chilled at TGI Friday's one night with Al, Ed, and Mike, as 20-somethings tend to do. A good time was had by all.

Hey did anyone catch that Major League All-Star Game last night on Fox, oh boy, what a disappointment ... not that I should have expected much more. It was funny to see hometown hero Roger Clemens get all roughed up before the Houston crowd in the first inning after all the hype, not to mention the whole Clemens-Mike Piazza "fued" that was nonexistant, just like I expected .... and then they go and give Clemens an award in the middle of the game. Why, because he sucked so much? Or is he tricking people again into thinking he's going to retire so they can applaud what a great career he had and give him gifts, only so he can turn the tables and come out of "retirement" next season? ... Predictably, there were so many stupid commercial advertisements and promotions, the usual annoying idiocy from announcers Joe Buck and Tim McCarver (just god-awful), not to mention the game taking eight hours to finish (and somehow they try to pretend they're marketing it to kids, with the talking cartoon baseball that teaches them the rules of the game and so on, meanwhile most kids are in bed at 11:30 p.m., and certainly not watching this boring-ass game) ... It didn't help that the game wasn't really close like last year's, at least from a real fan's perspective that would be interesting ... I wish somebody would start a "Just Sports" network that left out all the ESPN-style moronic wannabe-comedian anchors and announcers and all the "entertainment" extras and just focus on the damn games for once ..... anyway, that's my All-Star rant, at least the AL won so the Yanks will have homefield advantage in the World Series .........
Congrats to the U.S. Senate for rejecting a proposal to amend the Constitution and ban same-sex marriages today ... I'm not gay, nor do I necessarily support or approve of same-sex marriage. But I also believe in personal freedoms and the Constitution, and I don't feel the need to have a special amendment that would exclude a select group of people from the rights all Americans are entitled to. It's scary to think we're living in an age where politicians are attempting to limit our freedoms, whether it be through a gay marriage ban or the Patriot Act and so on, as opposed to expanding them, which is the basis of our country and the natural evolution of a free society. That's all. Finally, if you haven't heard it yet, you need to check out the new Slipknot album, Vol. 3: Subliminal Verses .... I had been kind of down on these guys lately and wasn't really excited to hear this new one, but when I did hear some tracks, it blew me away. It's produced by Rick Rubin, the mastermind behind classics like Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill, Run DMC - Raising Hell, Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Slayer - Reign in Blood and so on, and it's surprisingly good, in fact it's teriffic. Quite a varied sound throughout the album, it's really enjoyable. Maybe I'll do a review soon, along with that new Beastie Boys album like I said earlier. Maybe. But check them both out. Well I'm back from my visit to PSU, had some fun with Jen ... we ran into Penn State QB Zack Mills at the local Wal-Mart ... we also went to some ceremony kicking off PSU's 150th Birthday celebration, Pres. Graham Spanier talked and so did legendary football coach Joe Paterno, they also unveiled a new Creamery ice cream flavor, susquecentennial sundae or something, but Jen wouldn't let me get any ..... but overall it was a good time.
Jen will be back home next weekend and guess what, she'll finally join the ranks of adulthood ... that's right, she's turning 21! We will be going to Atlantic City to celebrate, hopefully we'll come back a little bit richer, if not a little bit hungover. Wednesday, July 07, 2004
Well I survived a tough week at work, my boss was on vacation so I had a lot going on .... it was alright though, he was pretty glad to come back and not have any complaints or problems like he has on past vacations so I guess that's the best compliment, everything went off without a hitch ...
Too bad I can't say the same for one of our competitors, the New York Post ... you probably heard recently that Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry recently picked John Edwards as his running mate ... unless you read the Post, that is. That's because on today's front page they ran a huge headline, photo and story saying he picked Dick Gephardt .... OOOPS. It was one of those "exclusive" stories, you know, "The Post has learned so and so" without really attributing a source. I'd say that source, and reporter, and the rest of the newsroom is in some serious hot water right about now. I'm just glad it wasn't the Daily Record ...... Anyway, now I'm off the next two days and heading up to PSU to see Jen. Can't wait!!!! Friday, July 02, 2004
Damn, what a Yankees game last night ...... an instant classic, 13-inning thriller against the Boston Red Sox, featuring all the drama of a postseason game here in July. Backup catcher John Flaherty (batting .153 on the season) had the game-winning, pinch-hit double in the 13th, only after the Red Sox took the lead on a Manny Ramirez home run earlier in the inning .... Derek Jeter smashed his face up diving into the stands after going all-out to catch a pop-up (meanwhile his BoSox counterpart, Nomar Garciaparra, couldn't bother to get in the game because he was resting his sore ankle, what a leader) .... Jason Giambi even came up to pinch-hit despite parasites that are eating away at his insides ... A-Rod made a teriffic double play to keep the game tied, making a perfect throw home to get a runner out ... rookie Brad Halsey was locked in a pitching duel with Sox ace Pedro Martinez ..... man, what a game, easily one of the best I've ever seen in the regular season. It wreaked havoc on our deadlines last night at the paper, but I kept things under control. The Red Sox are doomed .... GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!
In other news, Marlon Brando died today at 80 ... if you haven't seen Apocalypse Now or better yet, The Godfather, do yourself a favor and go check those out, immediately. What are you waiting for? Superb display of acting ... |
